Job summary

Ketek Group Inc. in Fort McMurray, AB is seeking a Shop Hand to support shop personnel and Project Managers. You will learn maintenance on Ketek equipment, operate hand tools, and handle tasks in a safety‑driven, team environment.

This entry level position emphasizes adaptability, willingness to learn, and strong work ethic. Local Fort McMurray role with no LOA; training through Training department; field and shop work with safety procedures emphasized.

Qualifications

  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s Licence and clean driving record.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Fluent in English (reading, written, spoken).
  • Experience working with basic hand tools.
  • Ability to deal with the public in a positive, courteous, and respectful manner.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and frequent demanding deadlines.
  • Ability to handle changing schedules and priorities, with high level prioritization skills.
  • Strong work ethic and organizational planning skills with attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Effective verbal and listening communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Receive, understand and execute instructions from Shop Foreman and senior staff.
  • Clean equipment and tools using high‑power pressure washer.
  • Disassemble equipment for thorough cleaning.
  • Identify faulty equipment and inform supervisor of problems.
  • Determine the correct type of tools/equipment to be used for a specific task.
  • Utilize checklists, inspections, work procedures and safety guidelines to complete tasks.
  • Complete assigned tasks in a safe, efficient and timely manner.
  • Perform routine housekeeping duties in the shop.
  • Complete all required paperwork daily, including hazard assessment and Daily Job Control Sheet.
  • Cooperate with Training department for scheduling of new/recertification training.
  • Observe all safety procedures and use proper Personal Protective Equipment.
  • Ensure Ketek’s work procedures, policies and Occupational Health and Safety regulations are followed.
  • Represent Ketek in a light that is commensurate with the values of Management and the Corporate Vision and Mission Statements.
  • Parts runs/vehicle deliveries and pickups.

POSITION BACKGROUND

In this entry level position, you will assist other shop personnel and Project Managers with a variety of tasks, while learning the basics of maintenance on Ketek equipment, including how to operate various hand tools. The Shop Hand is expected to be adaptable, eager to learn, and have basic mechanical aptitude. This position is a local to Fort McMurray role that will not provide for LOA or Accommodations.

CORE DUTIES
Shop Operations
  • Receive, understand and execute instructions from Shop Foreman and senior employees
  • Clean equipment and tools using high-power pressure washer
  • Disassemble equipment, if needed, to thoroughly clean
  • Identify faulty/damaged equipment and or defective materials and inform supervisor of problem
  • Determine the correct type of tools/equipment to be used for a specific task
  • Utilize checklists, inspections, work procedures and safety guidelines to complete tasks
  • Complete assigned tasks in a safe, efficient and timely manner
  • Perform routine housekeeping duties in the shop
Other Duties
  • Complete all required paperwork on a daily basis, including hazard assessment and Daily Job Control Sheet
  • Cooperate with Training department for scheduling of new/recertification training
  • Observe all safety procedures and use proper Personal Protective Equipment

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
Required
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s Licence and clean driver’s abstract
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Fluent in the English language (reading, written, spoken)
  • Experience working with basic hand tools
  • Ability to deal with the public in a positive, courteous, and respectful manner
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and frequent demanding deadlines
  • Ability to handle changing schedules and priorities, with high level prioritization skills

Preferred
  • Experience towing a trailer
  • Experience on oilfield or oil sandssites
  • Experience operating a wheel loader and/or skid steer
  • Experience in dewatering, well-testing, or water transfer

This position is defined as Safety Sensitive: Drug, Alcohol, Back, and Audio tests are required prior to commencing employment.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Physical Demands
  • Regularly required to stand/sit, talk/hear, stoop, climb, lift, balance, kneel and use of hands/fingers to operate tools, machinery and materials
  • Moderate to heavy lifting (up to 50lbs) may be required
  • Use of mechanical aids: overhead crane, forklift, pallet jack, and dolly may be required
  • Regular exposure to loud noises and metal particulates - hearing and respiratory protection is provided when needed
  • Potential exposure to acetylene gas, fumes, oil, and paint residue
  • Exposure to sharp edges, pinch points, trip and slip hazards, and blind spots
  • May be required to work in high, precarious places that are near moving parts and/or electrical works or in confined spaces
Work Environment
  • Field environment (10%) and shop environment (90%)
  • Outside of regular office hours as required
  • Required to work outside in all different weather conditions including extreme cold and heat
