Job Description
Position Purpose Summary

The Shelter Support Worker at Centre of Hope - Mount Waddington Community Ministries provides a safe and secure environment for guests and visitors. The incumbent may provide emotional support and crisis intervention and is responsible for the smooth operation of the facilities during their shift.

Hours

Monday, Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday from 4:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m.

Accountabilities
  • Serves as The Salvation Army's representative to shelter guests and visitors.
  • Reads HIFIS and staff-to-staff notes at the beginning of each shift.
  • Accurately records daily happenings, maintains logbooks, and completes reports.
  • May liaise with external agencies as needed (e.g., welfare, police, parole).
  • Handles admission, orientation, and evaluation of guests’ understanding of rules; enforces policies, including guest discipline.
  • Serves as receptionist, answering phones promptly.
  • Follows proper intake procedures for new guests.
  • Monitors activities of guests/residents, providing support and safe storage for medications.
  • Assists with meal preparation, cleanup, and serving, including checking food temperatures.
  • Completes kitchen and janitorial inventory reports.
  • Participates in training as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned, including calling in staff for last-minute absences.
  • Provides input on staff orientation, training, and evaluation.
  • Oversees coffee service schedule and completes cleaning duties.
  • Provides assistance to guests as needed and communicates dietary restrictions.
  • Treats all residents with respect and dignity at all times.
Health, Safety & Environmental
  • Performs property inspections and security checks as per policies.
  • Follows safety procedures and proper lifting techniques.
  • Checks intercom and monitors before answering the door with precautions.
  • Ensures proper sign-in/out of keys for security.
  • Regularly checks on the well-being of co-workers.
Critical Relationship Management

Internal: staff, management, clients.

External: community organizations, police, public agencies.

Leadership Responsibility

Reports to the Community Ministries Supervisor; no direct reports but may demonstrate procedures to others.

Materials Management

Minimal responsibility; responsible for safekeeping of materials and equipment.

Working Conditions

Work involves public interaction requiring courtesy and confidentiality. May involve hazardous conditions, physical exertion, and exposure to risks such as aggression, infectious diseases, pests, and emergencies. Proper precautions and health and safety rules must be followed.

Qualifications
  • Completed Grade 12 high school diploma.
  • Post-secondary diploma (1-2 years) in a related field is an asset.
  • CPR and First Aid certification.
  • Willingness to obtain Non-Violent Crisis Intervention certification.
  • Minimum one year experience in social services.
  • Knowledge of trauma-informed care and crisis intervention is an asset.
  • Experience in customer service is an asset.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and computer skills.

Compensation
