Job Overview

The Senior Underwriter provides risk assessment for individual insurance products, including life, critical illness, and medical disability lines. The role involves working closely with the field to support, train, and resolve issues, as well as guiding less experienced underwriters and participating in product and process improvements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review and analyze medical, financial, and personal information to assess risk.
  • Evaluate complex applications and policy changes, considering multiple risks and their interactions.
  • Determine reinsurance impact and escalate cases as needed.
  • Make high-level decisions in accordance with company guidelines and standards.
  • Maintain electronic summaries of underwriting requirements in the Phoenix system.
  • Collaborate with Distribution Management on complex cases and training.
  • Support advisors in processing business accurately and promptly.
  • Identify when deviations from procedures are necessary and recommend referrals.

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education with 2-3 years of related experience.
  • Progress towards or completed FALU or FLMI designation.
  • Strong decision-making, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • High integrity in handling confidential information.
  • Effective resource management and commitment to continuous improvement.

  • Proficiency in English; French is an asset.
  • Ability to work with diverse teams outside Québec.
