Job summary

Qualus seeks a Principal Electrical Engineer (P.Eng.) to lead senior technical authority on grid substation projects in Canada. The role focuses on complex design, client engagement, and advancing our Canadian engineering practice across Vancouver and Calgary.

The successful candidate will mentor teams, drive design quality, ensure compliance with CSA C22.1, IEEE, and IEC standards, and deliver innovative substations from concept through commissioning.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering from a recognized university.
• Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in Canada (registration in British Columbia or ability to obtain).
• 20+ years of experience in transmission and distribution engineering, with significant experience in substation design.
• Demonstrated experience serving as a technical authority, senior engineering lead, or Professional-of-Record on complex substation projects.
• Strong expertise in substation design, including layouts, grounding systems, bus design, insulation coordination, station service systems, and major equipment integration.
• In-depth knowledge of applicable codes and standards (CSA C22.1, IEEE, IEC) and OH&S requirements.
• Demonstrated ability to provide technical leadership and mentorship across multiple projects and teams.

Responsibilities

• Provide senior technical leadership on complex transmission and distribution substation projects across 12 kV to 735 kV.
• Act as Professional-of-Record (PoR) for design deliverables, ensuring technical accuracy, quality, and compliance.
• Lead development and approval of key deliverables: one-line diagrams, substation layouts, grounding studies, conduit routing.
• Provide oversight for complex studies including grounding, lightning protection, insulation coordination, and bus design.
• Mentor engineers, EITs, designers, and project teams to ensure engineering excellence.
