Job summary

The Planet Group is seeking an experienced electrical engineer to lead substation and high‑voltage design activities in Montreal, Canada. You will provide technical leadership across the full project lifecycle, from preliminary design to as‑built packages, and collaborate with cross‑functional teams on interconnection studies and HV equipment specifications.

You will mentor junior engineers, coordinate external resources, and contribute to continuous improvement of engineering processes.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • 7+ years hands-on experience in substation design.
  • PE license is highly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as SME for substation and HV engineering including physical design, protection and control, equipment specs, and electrical studies such as power flow and short-circuit.
  • Provide technical leadership and resolve substation design issues during project implementation.
  • Support transmission line design, interconnection applications, and related engineering activities; prepare/review single-line diagrams and studies.
  • Coordinate external electrical engineering resources to support workload and internal tasks.
  • Assist in procurement reviews and evaluations for major HV equipment like transformers and breakers.
  • Support other departments on substation design matters and lessons learned.
  • Provide project engineering management support on select projects.
  • Participate in external technical seminars.

Job description

Responsibilities (Project substation and transmission line engineering)
  • Serve as the subject matter expert for substation and high-voltage engineering, including physical design, protection and control design, major equipment specifications, and electrical design studies such as power flow, short-circuit, and protection coordination.
  • Provide technical leadership and resolution for all substation-related design issues during project implementation.
  • Support transmission line design, interconnection applications, and related engineering activities as required. Develop design criteria and technical specifications; prepare / review internal engineering deliverables, such as single-line diagrams and electrical studies.
  • Coordinate external electrical engineering resources required to support the projects' workload and supplement internal technical activities.
  • Support technical review of procurement packages, vendor submittals, and evaluations for major HV equipment such as power transformers and HV breakers.
  • Support other departments, including construction and O&M, on substation design matters such as lessons learned and specification changes.
  • Provide project engineering management support on select projects as needed.
  • Actively participate in external technical seminars.
Qualification
  • sEducation: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering
  • .Experience: Minimum 7 years of hands‑on experience in substation design
  • .Licensure: Professional Engineer (PE) License is highly preferred
.Technical Expertis
  • eSubstation Design: Deep understanding of substation and transmission line equipment, design principles, and the full project lifecycle (from preliminary design to "as-built" packages)
  • .Codes & Standards: Strong command of industry engineering codes and practices to ensure safe, cost-effective, and reliable designs
  • .Software: Proficient with electrical engineering design software such as ETAP, ASPEN, and PSCAD

  • nProblem Solving: Capable of independently diagnosing and resolving complex engineering challenges
  • .Teamwork & Mentorship: Proven ability to mentor junior engineers and lead cross-functional project tasks
