Job summary

Jobtailor in Vancouver, BC, seeks an Electrical Engineer focusing on protection, control, and metering for substations (12 kV–500 kV). You will design and coordinate systems and own key deliverables such as one-line diagrams, protection schematics, wiring diagrams, and panel layouts.

The role requires a BEng in Electrical Engineering, EIT status or pursuing P.Eng, and 4–6 years in power systems or substation design.

Responsibilities

  • Design protection, control, and metering systems for substations (12 kV–500 kV).
  • Develop and own deliverables: one-line diagrams, protection schematics, AC/DC schematics, wiring diagrams, panel layouts, interconnection diagrams.
  • Prepare specs, reports, construction packages, and test plans.
  • Assist outage planning, commissioning documentation, and FAT.
  • Provide configuration support for protection relays and automation devices.
  • Review vendor drawings and participate in design reviews and safety sessions.
  • Support field activities during construction, commissioning, and site visits.

Job description

  • Perform and coordinate the design of protection, control, and metering systems for electrical substations (12 kV to 500 kV) with limited supervision
  • Take ownership of key design deliverables, including one-line diagrams, protection schematics, AC/DC schematics, wiring diagrams, panel layouts, and interconnection diagrams
  • Develop protection and control design criteria and philosophies
  • Prepare and review specifications, reports, construction packages, and test plans
  • Assist in developing outage staging plans and commissioning documentation
  • Provide configuration support for protection relays and automation devices
  • Review vendor drawings and technical submissions
  • Participate in design reviews, Safety by Design sessions, and constructability assessments
  • Provide engineering support during construction and commissioning, including responding to RFIs and participating in site visits and field reviews
  • Participate in factory acceptance testing (FAT) and inspections as required
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure coordinated designs
  • Manage assigned tasks within scope, schedule, and budget constraints
  • Maintain accurate documentation and contribute to quality assurance and continuous improvement processes
  • Travel to client sites as required during project execution
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from a recognized university
  • Registered as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or eligible/in process with registration / working toward P.Eng. designation
  • 4-6 years of relevant experience in power systems, transmission & distribution, or substation design
  • Familiarity with substation protection and control systems, including relaying schemes and AC/DC designs
  • Exposure to utility standards and industry codes (CSA, IEEE, IEC, Canadian Electrical Code) is an asset
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD; familiarity with protection and controls tools or relay software is an asset
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to develop practical engineering solutions
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks in a deadline-driven environment
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with internal teams, clients, and vendors
  • Proven ability to collaborate within a multidisciplinary engineering environment
