Overview

Senior Electrical Engineer – Transmission & Substation Design

We are seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer to join a high-performing engineering team responsible for the design and delivery of electric utility transmission substations. This role focuses on developing innovative and reliable electrical design solutions supporting substations operating from 12kV through 500kV in a complex utility environment.

Responsibilities
  • Lead electrical design activities for substation projects, analyze complex engineering challenges, and develop practical solutions that align with industry standards and operational requirements.
  • Prepare technical specifications, review design documentation produced by internal teams and external consultants, and support procurement and construction activities.
  • Mentor junior engineers and Engineers-in-Training while ensuring engineering work meets technical, safety, and regulatory standards.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including civil, mechanical, structural, and protection & control engineers throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Contribute to the full project lifecycle—from early engineering studies and equipment specification through construction support, testing, and commissioning.
Qualifications
  • Degree in Electrical Engineering (Power Systems preferred).
  • 8+ years of experience in transmission substation engineering within a utility or consulting environment.
  • Strong communication, problem-solving, and leadership skills.
  • Expertise in major substation equipment such as power transformers, circuit breakers, reactors, capacitors, and disconnect switches.
  • Familiarity with modern grid technologies including FACTS devices, energy storage systems, and advanced grid infrastructure.
  • Experience with grounding studies, lightning protection, and substation design software is considered an asset.
