Job summary

Jobtailor is seeking an Electrical Engineer-in-Training to design protection, control, and metering systems for substations (12 kV to 500 kV). The role involves ownership of one-line diagrams, protection schematics, and wiring diagrams, plus preparation of specifications, test plans, and FAT support.

Travel to client sites is expected; strong collaboration across disciplines is essential. The ideal candidate has a Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering, 3–5 years in power systems, and familiarity

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from a recognized university.
  • EIT eligibility or in process with registration / working toward P.Eng. designation.
  • 3–5 years of relevant experience in power systems, transmission & distribution, or substation design.
  • Familiarity with substation protection and control systems, including relaying schemes and AC/DC designs.
  • Exposure to CSA, IEEE, IEC, and Canadian Electrical Code is an asset.
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD; familiarity with protection and controls tools or relay software is an asset.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to develop practical engineering solutions.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks in a deadline-driven environment.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with internal teams, clients, and vendors.
  • Proven ability to collaborate within a multidisciplinary engineering environment.

Responsibilities

  • Perform and coordinate the design of protection, control, and metering systems for electrical substations (12 kV to 500 kV) with limited supervision.
  • Support and gradually take ownership of one-line diagrams, protection schematics, AC/DC schematics and wiring diagrams, panel layouts, interconnection diagrams, and protection and control design criteria and philosophies.
  • Prepare and review specifications, reports, construction packages, and test plans.
  • Assist in developing outage staging plans and commissioning documentation.
  • Perform configuration support for protection relays and automation devices.
  • Review vendor drawings and technical submissions for alignment with project specifications and design intent.
  • Participate in design reviews, Safety by Design sessions, and constructability assessments.
  • Provide engineering support during construction and commissioning, including responding to RFIs and participating in site visits and field reviews.
  • Participate in factory acceptance testing (FAT) and inspections as required.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure coordinated designs.
  • Manage assigned project tasks within scope, schedule, and budget constraints.
  • Maintain accurate documentation and contribute to quality assurance and continuous improvement processes.
  • Travel to client sites as required during project execution.

Job description

Requirements
