POSITION: Senior Registered Veterinary Technologist - SRVT

STATUS: Permanent; Full-time

SHIFT: 40 hours per week

LOCATION: Penticton, BC

CLASSIFICATION: Exempt

About the Position:

Reporting to the Practice Manager, this position assists the doctors to the fullest possible extent, helping to deliver quality care to patients and aiding in achieving greater efficiencies in patient care delivery. This includes conducting examinations within scope, performing laboratory duties and treatments, drug dosages and dispensing, and assisting with surgeries. The position also provides direct communication to clients. Additionally, the RVT will be responsible for maintenance of instruments and equipment, medical record-keeping, housekeeping, administrative, inventory, and other duties as required to ensure efficient operations and high quality of care.

As a Senior RVT, this position performs the following duties with complete proficiency. It may also involve training, mentoring, and providing guidance to RVTs with less than 5 years of experience, RVT students, or veterinary students.

Specific duties include:

  • Triage patient care and treatments, coordinate with staff, review schedules, and prepare for procedures.
  • Assist veterinarians with administering medications, treatments, and performing procedures.
  • Calculate drug doses, monitor for side effects, ensure proper administration, and control/record controlled drugs.
  • Perform treatments such as wound care, bandage/splint changes, and ear cleaning.
  • Collect specimens and perform routine lab work to assist diagnosis and treatment.
  • Assist with diagnostic, medical, and surgical procedures using equipment like electrocardiography, radiography, and ultrasonography.
  • Hospitalize patients, monitor vital signs, administer fluids and medications, and manage IV access.
  • Perform sedation, anesthesia, and patient monitoring, including safety procedures and emergency protocols.
  • Perform dental treatments, corneal tests, eye pressure tests, and other diagnostic procedures.
  • Maintain medical records, tattooing, microchipping, and perform grooming tasks.
  • Manage weight-loss programs, assist in exams, humane euthanasia, and educate clients.
  • Handle administrative duties like cleaning equipment, organizing areas, stocking supplies, and billing.

Qualifications:

  • Successful completion of an accredited veterinary technologist program and registration with BCVTA or recognized equivalency.
  • Minimum of five years' experience as an RVT or equivalent, with proficiency in all practice areas.
  • Experience in delivering high-quality customer service.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Physical ability to perform job duties, including lifting and standing for long periods.
  • Understanding of safety protocols and handling techniques with animals.
  • Experience with veterinary practice software; Cornerstone experience is an asset.
  • Alignment with BC SPCA policies and values.
