In this role, you'll serve as a key technical advisor and business partner responsible for identifying infrastructure needs, evaluating investment opportunities, and developing defensible capital plans that support the safe, reliable, and cost-effective delivery of electricity. You'll collaborate with leaders and subject matter experts across the organization to balance operational priorities, risk management, asset performance, customer needs, and regulatory requirements.

This is an opportunity for a seasoned engineer who enjoys combining technical expertise, strategic thinking, and stakeholder engagement to influence the future of utility infrastructure.

In this role, you will:
  • Lead the development, prioritization, and stewardship of sustainment and growth capital plans for assets within the Kootenay and Boundary regions.
  • Partner with Operations, Engineering, Project Management, Asset Management, Regulatory, Environmental, Archeology, and Community Relations teams to identify infrastructure needs and develop practical, long-term solutions.
  • Evaluate investment opportunities through technical, financial, and risk-based analysis to support informed decision-making.
  • Develop business cases, project scopes, cost estimates, and investment recommendations that support capital planning and funding approvals.
  • Prioritize projects and programs using asset investment methodologies to maximize value creation and risk reduction.
  • Maintain and communicate capital plans, ensuring alignment with corporate objectives, budgets, regulatory requirements, and stakeholder expectations.
  • Perform technical assessments to support large customer connections, distributed energy resource interconnections, and planned or emergency system work.
  • Support initiatives focused on load forecasting, system reliability, grid modernization, and climate resilience.].
  • Represent FortisBC as a technical resource with municipalities, industry organizations, regulatory agencies, and external stakeholders.
  • Provide technical leadership, mentorship, and guidance to engineers and other team members while supporting a culture of continuous learning and collaboration.
What it takes:
  • A Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from a recognized post-secondary institution.
  • Eight years of progressively responsible experience in electric utility planning, operations, asset management, or system design.
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation in British Columbia, or eligibility to obtain registration.
  • Strong knowledge of electric transmission and distribution systems, utility asset management principles, and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Experience developing capital plans, business cases, investment strategies, and long-range infrastructure recommendations.
  • Strong analytical and financial assessment skills, including evaluating alternatives and balancing risk, cost, and operational requirements.
  • Experience performing technical assessments related to power systems, large customer connections, or distributed energy resources is considered an asset.
  • Exceptional communication, presentation, and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Proven ability to influence decisions, build consensus, and navigate competing priorities across a diverse group of stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated success leading initiatives, mentoring others, and driving continuous improvement in a complex environment.
