Senior Cost Control Specialist

Kamloops, British Columbia

Introduction

Reporting directly to the Manager, Cost Control, the Senior Cost Control Specialist will be a key resource for implementing project cost control methods, procedures, and systems on $2B project near Kamloops, British Columbia. The project is currently in its Construction Execution phase; The role expects rotation into the site on a 10×4 shift.

On the project assignment, the Senior Cost Control Specialist is accountable to the project team (via the Project Controls Manager) for the planning and implementation of effective project cost control resources, processes, and systems on the project, within the standards set by the Director, Project Controls.

Responsibilities
  • Champion a strong safety culture by adhering to and promoting all health, safety, and environmental policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Support the implementation and maintenance of project cost control processes, procedures, and management plans across assigned projects.
  • Develop and apply project-specific cost control methodologies, guidelines, and reporting frameworks aligned with organizational standards and project requirements.
  • Ensure cost management standards and best practices are consistently applied throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Manage project budgets, accruals, commitments, and cost data within designated cost management systems.
  • Align and maintain project work breakdown structures (WBS), cost accounts, and cost elements to support accurate financial tracking and reporting.
  • Review and validate project invoices, expenditures, and financial transactions to ensure compliance with contractual and project requirements.
  • Develop and maintain project forecasts, including cash flow, commitments, incurred costs, and budget performance metrics.
  • Monitor and manage project cost changes, trends, and variances, ensuring timely identification and communication of potential impacts to project performance.
  • Apply earned value management and productivity analysis techniques to assess project performance and support decision-making.
  • Prepare and deliver monthly cost reports, financial analyses, dashboards, and project presentations for stakeholders and project leadership.
  • Collaborate with project accounting and finance teams to support financial reporting, capitalization activities, and overall project financial governance.
  • Maintain accurate project controls documentation and ensure project information is captured within corporate reporting and database systems.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of project controls processes, tools, standards, and methodologies.
  • Share lessons learned and best practices to enhance organizational project controls capabilities and support future project success.
Requirements
  • Degree or diploma in engineering, accounting, finance or business, or diploma in a trade is required.
  • 10+ years of project cost control experience, with preference to mining/industrial projects, is required.
  • 5+ years of project cost control experience in an Owner’s role is required.
  • 3+ years of field experience is required.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in project management and project controls techniques and principles is required.
  • Strong knowledge of the engineering and construction industry is required.
  • Experience in Detailed Engineering and Execution stages of projects is required.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, are required.
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving abilities are required.
  • Experience using cost control software such as Unifier, PRISM or Cleopatra is considered an asset.
  • Experience using a scheduling tool like MS Project or Primavera 6 is considered an asset.
  • CPA, PEng or AScT registration considered an asset.
  • CCP, CEP, PMP or other similar designations considered an asset.
