Job summary

Freeport-McMoRan is seeking a Senior Process Engineer in Vancouver to lead process engineering efforts across the project lifecycle, supporting large-scale mineral processing and plant design. Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemical/Metallurgical/Process Engineering with 5+ years of mineral processing experience.

Job description

Title: Senior Process Engineer

Located in Downtown Vancouver’s central business district, this area is a dense, high-end urban neighborhood dominated by major office towers, financial institutions, and professional services. Employees in Vancouver mostly follow a hybrid schedule where they are required to work in office, attend in‑person meetings or training and may also collaborate virtually. It offers a fast‑paced, corporate environment with strong transit access and a mix of nearby dining, retail, and residential amenities.

What You Will Do

Under general direction, this position will serve as a senior technical resource within the Capital Project Design & Delivery team, providing process engineering expertise throughout the planning, design, and execution of large-scale mineral processing and plant engineering capital projects. You will support major studies, develop design packages, and contribute to successful project delivery across all phases.

  • Lead and support process engineering efforts throughout all phases of the project lifecycle, including project scoping, prefeasibility and feasibility studies, FEL/FEED activities, detailed engineering, commissioning, and startup.
  • Review, evaluate, and optimize process designs for mineral processing systems, including crushing, grinding, flotation, thickening, filtration, tailings management, water systems, and related material handling and pumping circuits.
  • Develop, review, and validate key process engineering deliverables, including process flow diagrams (PFDs), piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), design criteria, equipment specifications, process control philosophies, and operating strategies.
  • Provide technical leadership and oversight for EPCM and EPC contractors to ensure engineering deliverables align with project requirements, company standards, and operational readiness objectives.
  • Assess emerging technologies, equipment solutions, and process improvement opportunities to enhance the reliability, efficiency, and sustainability of mineral processing operations.
  • Support project risk management activities through participation in HAZOPs, operability reviews, design verification efforts, and other engineering risk assessments.
  • Partner with site operations, maintenance, process design, and corporate engineering teams to ensure project solutions meet operational, regulatory, safety, and performance requirements.
  • Contribute to the development of project budgets, schedules, forecasts, and strategic plans related to process engineering scope and execution.
  • Support commissioning, startup, and ramp‑up activities by developing commissioning plans, executing test procedures, and verifying process performance against design objectives.
  • Serve as a process engineering representative on company steering committees, technical review boards, and cross‑functional project teams.
  • Performs other duties as required.

What You Bring

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Process Engineering, or a related discipline and at least five (5) years of experience in mineral processing, process engineering, or capital project execution; OR
  • Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Process Engineering, or a related discipline and at least three (3) years of experience in mineral processing, process engineering, or capital project execution.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Mineral Processing.
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng. or PE) designation, or eligibility to obtain certification.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting major capital projects through scoping, prefeasibility, feasibility, FEL/FEED, detailed engineering, commissioning, and startup.
  • Experience working with EPCM/EPC contractors and multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • Strong understanding of mineral processing operations including crushing, grinding, flotation, thickening, filtration, tailings, water systems, and reagent systems.
  • Proficiency with process simulation and mass balance tools such as METSIM, HSC, JKSimMet, JKSimFloat, or equivalent.
  • Experience developing and reviewing PFDs, P&IDs, design criteria, equipment specifications, control philosophies, and operating strategies.
  • Experience supporting commissioning, startup, ramp‑up, and operational readiness programs.

Physical Demands & Work Environment

  • Ability to travel to the United States and internationally up to 20% of the time, depending on project needs and collaboration requirements.
  • Must be able to work in a potentially stressful environment.
  • Personal protective equipment is required when performing work in a mine, outdoor, manufacturing or plant environment, including hard hat, hearing protection, safety glasses, safety footwear, and as needed, respirator, rubber steel‑toe boots, protective clothing, gloves and any other protective equipment as required.

What We Offer You

The estimated annual pay‑range for this role is currently $110,000 - $140,000 CAD. This range reflects base salary only and does not include bonus payments, benefits or retirement contributions. Actual base pay is determined by experience, qualifications, skills and other job‑related factors. This role is eligible for additional discretionary and incentive payment considerations based on company and individual performance. More details will be shared during the hiring process.
