Job summary

AECOM is seeking a Principal Engineer to join our Tunneling Practice in Burnaby. The role targets large rock caverns and pressurized water conveyance projects, requiring senior technical expertise and leadership across Canada.

You will perform 2D/3D rock mechanics analyses, develop lining concepts, and provide geotechnical design input for pumped-storage, hydropower and water conveyance schemes. Hybrid work is offered with sponsorship for Canadian employment.

Qualifications

• Minimum 6 years of relevant experience in rock tunnels and caverns.
• Strong capability in rock mechanics and numerical analysis.
• Proven ability to lead complex underground design solutions.

Responsibilities

• Lead design of rock caverns and underground water conveyance systems.
• Perform 2D/3D rock mechanics analyses for caverns, tunnels and shafts.
• Develop and review lining concepts for underground works.
• Provide geotechnical design parameters and value engineering guidance.
• Define design criteria, construction sequencing, and technical requirements.
• Lead technical reviews, risk assessments, and reviews of key deliverables.
• Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams and mentor engineers.
• Serve as technical lead for major underground projects in hydropower/pumped-storage.
• Provide independent design reviews and technical assurance.
• Support business development with proposals and client presentations.
