Job summary

City of Red Deer is seeking an HR Specialist – Pension and Payroll to administer and optimize payroll and pension programs. You will review complex matters, ensure data integrity, and advise management on compliance and risk.

The role collaborates with People Services and Finance, providing expert guidance and implementing process improvements. This full-time position offers a strong benefit package and regular weekday hours, with some evenings or weekends as needed.

Qualifications

• Post-secondary credential in payroll, accounting, or related field.
• 5+ years of progressive payroll experience with pension administration.
• Strong knowledge of payroll legislation, taxation, and pension requirements.
• Experience with HRIS, payroll and financial systems.
• Advanced Excel and data analysis skills.

Responsibilities

• Provide expert oversight of payroll and pension processes for accuracy and compliance.
• Resolve complex payroll and pension issues, discrepancies, and escalations.
• Interpret legislation, policies, and pension plan provisions.
• Monitor compliance, identify risks, and drive process improvements.
• Oversee reconciliations, financial analysis, and internal controls.
• Support audits, year-end reporting, and regulatory inquiries.
• Participate in system upgrades, testing, and data integrity reviews.
• Serve as SME to Payroll, HR, Finance and stakeholders.
• Recommend corrective actions, system enhancements, and risk mitigation.
• Provide backup support for benefits administration and safety compliance.
