Job summary

The Alberta Public Service is seeking a Senior Parks Data Analyst in Edmonton to lead analytics, applied research and reporting within the Parks Division. You will develop analytical frameworks, tools and systems to inform evidence-based planning and decision-making.

Responsibilities include leading survey programs, building predictive models and dashboards, and guiding data governance to ensure data quality and reproducibility. Occasional province-wide travel may be required.

Qualifications

• University graduation in a related field plus four years of related experience in advanced data analysis or research.
• Equivalency: 1 year of education for 1 year of experience or 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.
• Experience with SPSS, R, Python, SAS and related tools.
• Strong communication and ability to translate analyses to non-technical audiences.

Responsibilities

• Apply advanced qualitative and quantitative methods to identify trends, patterns, risks and emerging issues across complex datasets.
• Lead social science research, survey programs, program evaluations and applied research initiatives.
• Develop statistical analyses, predictive models and forward-looking insights to support decision-making.
• Clean, integrate, validate and analyze data from multiple sources, including operational, survey, reservation, revenue and external datasets.
• Provide expert advice on research design, sampling, survey methodology, data interpretation and analytical standards.
• Prepare dashboards, reports and briefing materials for senior leaders.
• Establish data governance frameworks and processes to support data quality and integrity.
• Design and maintain data systems, automated reports and performance-monitoring tools.
• Mentor staff and promote data literacy across the division.
• Collaborate with internal and external partners to address priorities and requirements.

Role Responsibilities

The Senior Parks Data Analyst provides leadership and expertise in data analytics, applied research, data governance and operational reporting within the Parks Division. Working with a high degree of independence, the position develops analytical frameworks, tools, and systems that support evidence-based planning, policy development and decision‑making.

Responsibilities include:

• Apply advanced qualitative and quantitative methods to identify trends, patterns, risks and emerging issues across complex datasets.
• Lead social science research, survey programs, program evaluations and applied research initiatives.
• Develop statistical analyses, predictive models and forward-looking insights to support strategic and operational decision-making.
• Clean, integrate, validate and analyze data from multiple sources, including operational, survey, reservation, revenue and external datasets.
• Provide expert advice on research design, sampling, survey methodology, data interpretation and analytical standards.
• Prepare dashboards, reports, briefing materials, presentations and recommendations for senior leaders and other decision-makers.
• Establish data governance frameworks and processes to support data quality, consistency, integrity and appropriate use.
• Design and maintain data systems, automated reporting solutions, standardized forms, workflows and performance-monitoring tools.
• Build analytical capacity across the division by mentoring staff, developing guidance and training resources, and promoting data literacy.
• Collaborate with internal and external partners to ensure analytical products and solutions address divisional priorities and operational requirements.
• Manage multiple data and research initiatives while ensuring methodologies are transparent, reproducible and aligned with recognized standards.

This position may require occasional within-province travel (2-3 times per year).

Qualifications

Education and Experience required: University graduation in a related field (social sciences, behavioral economics, economics, statistics, data analytics, computer science or a related discipline) plus four years of related experience in advanced data analysis, statistical or predictive modelling, social science research, or the analysis of complex datasets; or equivalent as described below.

• Developing, validating, and interpreting predictive models or machine-learning solutions.
• Designing and conducting social science research, surveys, program evaluations, and applied research projects.
• Using statistical and analytical software such as SPSS, R, Python, SAS, or similar tools.
• Leading or supporting multiple analytics, research, or information management projects involving diverse stakeholders.
• Translating complex analytical findings into clear, actionable information for technical and non-technical audiences.

Assets:

• Knowledge of the Alberta Provincial Parks system and its governance.
• Master's degree or PhD in social sciences, behavioural economics, economics, statistics, data analytics, or a related discipline.
• Experience with survey platforms such as Qualtrics, Survey123, or Opinio.
• Experience with natural language processing, web data analysis, web scraping, data mining, machine learning or other emerging analytical tools and technologies.
• Experience developing performance measurement and monitoring frameworks.
• Knowledge of government reporting requirements, policy environments, accountability frameworks, and audit requirements.
