Job summary

CHES Special Risk Inc. in Toronto is seeking an experienced Underwriter to evaluate, price and manage insurance risks across lines of property & casualty. You will underwrite complex submissions, maintain broker relationships and contribute to portfolio profitability.

The role requires 10+ years of underwriting experience, strong analytical and negotiation skills, and proficiency with underwriting systems. Hybrid work is available with a focus on regulatory compliance and mentorship.

Qualifications

• Ten years of underwriting experience in property and casualty insurance, preferably within an MGA or insurer.
• Strong knowledge of commercial underwriting practices.
• Excellent analytical, negotiation, and decision-making skills.
• Proficiency in underwriting systems and portfolio management tools.
• Bilingual (French and English) is an asset for Canadian MGAs.

Responsibilities

• Assess and underwrite new business, renewals, and endorsements per MGA guidelines and delegated authority.
• Analyze risk exposures and determine coverage terms, limits, and pricing.
• Collaborate with brokers to negotiate terms and provide responsive service.
• Monitor portfolio performance and contribute to underwriting strategy and profitability.
• Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and internal underwriting standards.
• Mentor and guide junior underwriters.
• Participate in product development and update underwriting guidelines.
• Maintain accurate documentation and underwriting files.
• Represent the MGA at industry events and broker meetings.
