Job summary

The Morson Group is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to support BC Hydro’s Non-Integrated Areas Planning group on a 1-year term in Edmonds, BC. The role covers design, costing, inspection and troubleshooting of diesel generating station mechanical systems within an electric utility environment.

You will work 2–3 days on site with a focus on gensets, engine auxiliaries, fuel handling, HVAC, fire protection and lifting equipment, liaising with operations, suppliers and consultants to deliver

Qualifications

  • Experience with preliminary design, costing, inspection, and troubleshooting of diesel generating station mechanical systems.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication with operations staff, suppliers, contractors, and consultants.
  • Experience supporting diesel generation mechanical systems (gensets, engine auxiliary, fuel storage and transfer, HVAC, fire protection, lifting equipment).
  • Self-starter who can work independently with minimal direction.
  • Proactive in identifying issues and actions; strong problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities.

Responsibilities

  • Provide preliminary design, costing, inspection and troubleshooting for diesel generating station mechanical systems.
  • Support engine/genset and associated infrastructure within an electric utility setting.
  • Collaborate with operations staff, suppliers, contractors and consultants to advance work packages.

Job description

Role: Mechanical Engineer
Duration: Start Date: 2026-11-03 - End Date: 2027-11-06
Location: Edmonds, BC - 2/3 days per week on site
Max INC Rate: $103.11
Max T4 Rate: $85.21/

Overview

This role will support the BC Hydro Non-Integrated Areas Planning group in managing an increasing mechanical workload across capital projects, OMA work programs, and Owner's Engineer review activities. The successful candidate will provide preliminary design, costing, inspection, and troubleshooting expertise for diesel generating station mechanical systems in an electric utility environment. Responsibilities include supporting diesel gensets (50 kW-2.8 MW), engine auxiliary systems, diesel fuel storage and transfer systems, HVAC and fire protection systems, and cranes, hoists, and other lifting devices, while working closely with operations staff, suppliers, contractors, and consultants.

Must Have
  • Experience with preliminary design, costing, inspection, and troubleshooting of mechanical systems for diesel generating stations in an electric utility environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with demonstrated ability to liaise effectively with operations staff, suppliers, contractors, and consultants.
  • Experience supporting diesel generation mechanical systems, including diesel gensets, engine auxiliary systems, diesel fuel storage and transfer systems, HVAC and fire protection systems, and lifting equipment.
  • Self-starter with the ability to work independently, identify priorities, and perform effectively with minimal direction.
  • Demonstrated initiative with the ability to proactively identify issues, opportunities, and required actions.
  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting capabilities, particularly when evaluating mechanical systems and technical issues.
  • Ability to work effectively in ambiguous environments and apply sound judgment to advance work activities.
  • P.Eng and Permit to Practice (can be set up upon offer)
Nice to Have
  • Experience with diesel generation systems and related infrastructure.
  • Familiarity with costing, inspection, troubleshooting, and maintenance activities associated with power generation assets.
  • Experience using Microsoft Copilot or other AI-enabled productivity tools in a professional environment.
  • Ability to use AutoCAD for conceptual design layouts and preliminary drafting activities.
