Overview
Senior Hydraulics Engineer – Water Intake and Hydraulic Infrastructure Design Expert

The Senior Hydraulics Engineer serves as a specialist in hydraulic studies and the design of water intake systems, potable water and wastewater pumping stations, intake pipelines, and associated infrastructure. The role also involves acting as a subject matter expert in the design of reservoirs, retention basins, and other urban and industrial hydraulic facilities.

The incumbent is responsible for the planning, analysis, design, and construction follow-up of hydraulic infrastructure projects serving a variety of sectors, including municipal, hydroelectric, mining, industrial, and environmental markets.

The successful candidate will participate in all phases of projects, from feasibility studies through commissioning.

Your Role

As a Hydraulics Project Engineer, you will:

  • Participate in and conduct hydraulic studies for water intake structures located in rivers, lakes, reservoirs, or marine environments.
  • Determine design flows, water levels, flow velocities, and head losses within hydraulic networks.
  • Assess the impacts of ice, sediments, floating debris, and seasonal variations on intake facilities.
  • Design surface and submerged water intakes for industrial, mining, and municipal facilities in collaboration with Civil Engineering teams.
  • Design screens, strainers, approach basins, intake chambers, control structures, and pumping stations.
  • Define hydraulic, structural, and operational design criteria.
  • Collaborate with civil, mechanical, geotechnical, environmental, and electrical teams to ensure proper integration of infrastructure components.
  • Prepare design criteria documents, calculations, technical reports, and specifications.
  • Develop plans and specifications for conceptual, preliminary, and detailed design stages.
  • Conduct multidisciplinary technical reviews.
  • Participate in project planning and engineering effort estimating.
  • Act as a key point of contact with clients and regulatory authorities.
  • Serve as the team's hydraulic engineering subject matter expert.
  • Present engineering concepts, assumptions, and study results.
  • Ensure the technical quality control of project deliverables.
  • Provide construction support.
  • Respond to contractors' requests for information (RFIs).
  • Review shop drawings and equipment technical data sheets.
  • Participate in site inspections and commissioning activities.
About You
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Water Resources Engineering, Hydraulic Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Master's degree in Applied Hydraulics (an asset).
  • Minimum of 15 years of relevant experience.
  • Registered Professional Engineer and member of the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec (OIQ), or eligible for registration.
  • Significant experience in the design of water intake systems, pumping stations, or major hydraulic infrastructure.
  • Experience in hydraulic systems for water treatment and wastewater treatment facilities (an asset).
  • Experience in the hydroelectric, mining, industrial, or municipal sectors.
  • Knowledge of Canadian standards and applicable environmental regulations.
  • Strong understanding of interactions between civil, mechanical, and process engineering disciplines.
  • Client-focused with a strong results orientation.
  • Ability to mentor and develop junior engineers.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Microsoft Project.
  • Experience with urban hydraulic modeling software is considered an asset (e.g., PCSWMM, WaterGEMS).
  • Experience with transient hydraulic modeling software is considered an asset (e.g., OpenFlows HAMMER, SIMSEN).
  • Experience with CFD hydraulic modeling software is considered an asset (e.g., OpenFOAM).
  • Personal qualities: autonomy, leadership, goal-oriented mindset, strong client focus, and excellent teamwork skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in both French and English.

* This position requires proficiency in a language other than French, specifically English, as the clients and suppliers with whom you will interact are primarily English-speaking and located outside Quebec.
