Job Description

The Senior Geotechnical Engineer is a member of the Shared Technical Services team and is responsible for providing geotechnical engineering support to Magna Mining’s Sudbury operations, with a focus on ground control, excavation stability, geotechnical risk management, and safe mine design. The role works closely with Engineering, Geology, and Operations to monitor ground conditions, provide practical recommendations, and support safe and efficient mining activities.

Responsibilities
  • Provide geotechnical engineering support to Magna’s site engineering teams related to all aspects of rock mechanics and excavation stability.
  • Work closely with the long term and strategic planning teams to establish and ensure geotechnical guidelines are incorporated into life of mine plans and study work.
  • Lead the development of internal best practices related to rock mechanics and help the site teams ensure Mine Designs reflect these as part of ongoing review work.
  • Oversee geotechnical investigation programs, structural geology assessments and data interpretation.
  • Conduct and/or arrange for third party numerical modeling and analysis of new mining areas, extraction techniques or other changing site conditions.
  • Identify , assess, and communicate geotechnical risks and recommend appropriate controls and mitigation measures.
  • Carry out regular Critical Control Verifications to ensure as-built conditions match design, and that quality assurance / control systems are functioning as designed.
  • Mentor junior engineers and promote best practices.
  • Work with the Safety & Training team to ensure initial and refresher training programs related to ground control are accurate & sound.
  • Conduct internal audits of the sites’ records and practices to ensure both ongoing regulatory compliance and technical due diligence.
Requirements

Qualifications: Formal Education, Certifications or Equivalents

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering , Geological Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Registered or eligible for registration as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO).
  • 5 or more years of geotechnical, rock mechanics, or ground control experience in an underground mining environment is required .
  • Experience with underground geotechnical mapping, ground support design, instrumentation, and monitoring is an asset.
  • Experience with geotechnical modelling and mine planning software is considered an asset.
  • Knowledge of Ontario mining regulations and underground ground control requirements is considered an asset.
  • Strong understanding of rock mechanics, ground control principles, and underground mining methods.
  • Strong analytical, technical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to assess geotechnical risks and develop practical solutions for underground operations.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively with both technical and operational teams.
  • Ability to communicate technical information clearly and provide practical recommendations.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Comfortable working in an underground mining environment and completing regular field inspections.
  • Demonstrated commitment to health and safety, teamwork, continuous improvement, and operational excellence.
