BBA is seeking a Senior Geotechnical Engineer to lead geotechnical projects in Alberta, collaborating with a team in Calgary and Edmonton. You will engage with clients, solve complex challenges, and drive growth while remaining hands-on in design reviews and mentorship.

The role combines technical leadership with business development, requiring a strong track record in geotechnical engineering, client relationships, and Alberta regulatory knowledge.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in civil engineering with geotechnical focus.
  • 20+ years of geotechnical project experience.
  • Proficient with Rocscience, GeoStudio, and Plaxis.
  • Knowledge of Alberta codes and APEGA registration.
  • Excellent technical writing and reporting skills.
  • Track record of generating new business for clients.

Responsibilities

  • Lead geotechnical projects across Alberta's energy, mining, and infrastructure sectors.
  • Mentor and coach junior staff and lead technical reviews.
  • Grow client relationships and lead business development efforts.
  • Lead production of geotechnical reports, drawings, and specifications.
  • Plan, manage, and supervise site investigations.
  • Travel to project sites mainly in Alberta and across Canada.

This opportunity is for a motivated geotechnicalengineer who is team-oriented and has outstanding experience assessing, analyzing,designing and demonstrating leadership across the mining, oil sands,hydroelectric and heavy civil infrastructure sectors. Your primary role will beto engage with our clients to solve their most complex challenges. You’ll workclosely with our senior, intermediate and junior geotechnical and civilengineers to deliver these projects, while also driving the businessdevelopment and strategic growth of BBA's geotechnical services in Alberta.

Alberta faces some of Canada’s most complex geotechnicalchallenges, from oil sands tailings dams and mine waste facilities, tohydroelectric and decarbonization projects. To meet this demand, BBA has builta team of more than 100 specialists in Calgary and Edmonton and is looking fora Senior Geotechnical Engineer. This role is ideal for a doer-seller who servesas a trusted advisor to clients, builds strong client relationships, wins newwork and leads technical reviews while remaining hands-on to stamp drawings,defend designs, mentor teams and deliver high-quality projects.

  • Serve as a technical leader or reviewer for geotechnical projects across Alberta's mining, oil sands and energy sectors
  • Provide early-stage technical guidance in support of our technical risk management and assessments
  • Develop tools, systems, processes, blog articles, conference papers and training to build our service offerings
  • Lead the production of geotechnical reports, specifications and drawings
  • Prepare and manage site investigation plans
  • Lead geotechnical investigations, geohazard evaluations, air-photo or LiDAR interpretations, slope stability evaluation, instrumentation and construction monitoring
  • Mentor, coach and train less experienced professionals, as required
  • Own and grow strategic client relationships across Alberta's energy, mining and infrastructure markets
  • Lead business development pursuits, from identifying opportunities and shaping win strategies to writing proposals and closing new work
  • Serve as BBA's doer-seller in the region: stay hands-on with technical delivery while personally opening doors, building client trust and converting relationships into repeat business
  • Travel to project sites mainly in Alberta, but also across Canada and internationally, as required

Summary of certifications and jobrequirements
  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in civil engineering, with an emphasis on geotechnical engineering
  • More than 20 years of experience in geotechnical projects
  • High proficiency with advanced 2D and 3D static and dynamic soil-structure interaction and geostructural design software, such as Rocscience (RS2/RS3, RSpile, Slide2/3), GeoStudio (Slope/W, Sigma/W, Seep/W) and Plaxis
  • Deep knowledge of geotechnical engineering, soil mechanics, rock mechanics and applicable Alberta codes, standards and regulatory requirements (e.g., APEGA, Alberta Dam and Canal Safety Directive)
  • Professional Engineer designation with the APEGA, or equivalent
  • Excellent technical writing skills, with proven experience preparing high-quality engineering reports, memoranda and design documentation
  • Asset: a track record of personally generating new business and expanding client accounts; true doer-seller experience
