Your Opportunity

Fire Protection Engineers plan, design, and direct complex engineering projects to prevent, detect, control, or reduce fire and smoke in buildings and structures. They recommend materials, equipment, or systems to safeguard life and property, analyze fire behavior, and model safety features. Our Ottawa-based engineering team seeks a Senior Fire Protection Engineer to assess fire protection needs, focus on mechanical system design and selection, and create drawings using CAD or BIM software. You will help develop a local fire engineering team and collaborate with international colleagues on projects across the continent.

Your Key Responsibilities
  1. Perform advanced engineering design tasks related to fire protection systems, including drawings, hydraulic calculations, fire flow analysis, reports, and ensuring compliance with NFPA and regulatory standards.
  2. Conduct fire/life safety code reviews and analyses.
  3. Mentor and develop junior engineers and designers to build a support team within the Ottawa office and across Canada.
  4. Conduct quality assurance and control reviews on fire protection projects.
  5. Develop project scope, budgets, and design approaches for small projects, and support marketing and business development efforts.
  6. Collaborate with stakeholders in client meetings, coordination meetings with consultants, owners, contractors, and vendors, and prepare project documentation.
  7. Lead project coordination meetings and oversee the preparation of project specifications and construction documents.
  8. Supervise staff, providing guidance and mentoring to enhance their technical skills.
  9. Engage in complex fire protection projects as a technical resource.
  10. Apply current principles and practices of fire protection engineering, staying informed of new methods and developments.
  11. Contribute to developing new standards and specifications for fire protection engineering.
Qualifications
Your Capabilities and Credentials
  • Strong understanding of project document production and the relationship between drawings and specifications.
  • Experience with HydraCAD for hydraulic calculations.
  • Experience with CFD modeling tools like FDS, CFAST, ASCOS is a plus.
  • Knowledge of mechanical systems, materials, industry standards, and codes such as NFPA, OBC, NBCC, NFCC.
  • Leadership skills to guide teams through project phases.
  • Ability to review work for accuracy, manage time effectively, and participate in team collaboration.
  • Knowledge of sustainable building practices and innovative engineering solutions.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and interview skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Revit, AutoCAD; experience with Newforma, Trane Trace, eQuest is preferred.
  • Ability to obtain required security clearances.
Education & Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical or Fire Protection preferred) and licensed as a Professional Engineer in Ontario.
  • Quebec licensing is an asset.
  • Minimum 8 years of related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.

This role involves a hybrid work environment, combining office, client site visits, and remote work.
