Job summary

Alberta Energy Regulator is seeking a Senior Specialist for Facility Decommissioning and Abandonment to lead technical and regulatory efforts across the lifecycle of AER-regulated facilities in Alberta. You will drive end-of-life planning, liability assessment, and closure outcomes, shaping standards, reporting, and policy with industry stakeholders to ensure timely and safe facilities closure.

The role requires a professional engineer (APEGA preferred) with 10+ years in energy facility

Qualifications

• 10+ years of related experience in operations, environmental or facility engineering within the energy sector, including field experience at industrial facilities.
• Expertise in closure and decommissioning of various energy facility types (e.g., multi-well batteries, gathering stations, compressors, gas plants).
• Understanding of Directive 056, 058, 011 and Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act.
• Familiarity with Liability Management Framework and Oil & Gas Acts/regulations.
• Experience or familiarity in policy review and development.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work collaboratively and influence others while maintaining professional relationships.

Responsibilities

• Develop and implement standards and regulatory requirements for timely decommissioning of AER-regulated facilities.
• Identify gaps in the regulatory framework to define closure milestones, activities, and outcomes.
• Enhance closure cost estimation methodologies for regional/site-specific liabilities.
• Support improved annual facility and closure performance reporting.
• Review decommissioning proposals, plans, reports, site inspections, and industry meetings.
• Participate in key policy initiatives led by the Government of Alberta.
