Job description

The role of the Senior Risk Assessor in the Brownfield Assessment and Development service group is to strengthen and expand MEMS’s services with a focus on technical expertise in contaminated sites assessment and complex risk assessment projects (human and ecological) for operating and non-operating facilities across western Canada. This senior role emphasizes high-quality project execution, building skills within MEMS to foster long-term client relationships, generate repeat business, and expand services, all within a culture promoting career growth for junior and intermediate staff. The position is primarily office-based in a demanding consultative environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Ensure human health and ecological risk assessment practices align with internal and external policies.
  2. Lead complex risk assessment projects.
  3. Provide technical support and senior review for risk assessments.
  4. Lead and improve risk assessment processes and policies; contribute to client growth plans to foster long-term relationships.
  5. Promote career development and training for staff, aligning individual growth with company opportunities.
  6. Collaborate with key staff, contractors, and stakeholders.
  7. Support other disciplines such as hydrogeology, site assessment, and remediation as needed.

Education and Experience:

  1. Minimum ten (10) years of experience as an Environmental Risk Assessment professional, preferably in consulting.
  2. Detailed understanding of site-specific risk assessment procedures and environmental guidelines.
  3. Proven track record of completing complex risk assessments with limited supervision.
  4. Experience managing client relationships.
  5. Ability to develop conceptual site models from diverse datasets and mentor others; familiarity with Alberta Tier 1 and Tier 2 guidelines or equivalents.
  6. Advanced knowledge in hydrogeology, soil science, environmental chemistry, contaminant transport, modeling, and toxicity.
  7. Experience in developing risk-based site management strategies and with contaminant transport modeling is an asset.
  8. Eligibility for professional organization membership.
  9. Ability to meet site access requirements, including drug, alcohol, and fitness testing, and possess a valid Class 5 Driver’s license.

Other Knowledge and Skills:

  1. Advanced knowledge of provincial and federal legislation and environmental risk assessment processes.
  2. Strong understanding of Alberta guidelines and equivalent documents.
  3. Knowledge of the upstream and downstream oil and gas, oil sands, and industrial sectors.
  4. Pragmatic, outcome-based approach and innovative problem-solving skills.
  5. Excellent technical, project management, analytical, writing, and organizational skills.
  6. Knowledge of numerical modeling; self-motivated with a strong work ethic; effective in multidisciplinary teams.
  7. Mentoring and deadline management skills.

Working Conditions:

  1. Office environment with prolonged sitting and computer use.
  2. Occasional long hours, travel, and outside work hours may be required.

Compensation: BC Salary Range: $95,000 - $147,000, based on qualifications and experience.
