Job description

Company Description

For two decades, H2Safety has proudly led North America in emergency response management, Health Safety and Environment (HSE), and emergency software services. While our market leadership resides in Canada, our reach extends across the United States and worldwide.

H2Safety Services Inc., an SGS company, is a Calgary-based emergency management firm. We provide emergency response planning, hazard assessment and dispersion modelling, GIS, emergency management training, 24/7 incident support, Indigenous emergency management and the H2CommandCentre platform to energy and industrial clients across Canada.

Job Description

The Senior Emergency Management Advisor is a senior subject matter expert (SME) and client relationship lead at H2Safety. The Advisor provides regulatory and technical direction on emergency response plans and emergency management programs for a portfolio of key clients, acts as lead SME on business development pursuits, and serves as a senior technical reviewer of client deliverables.

The role carries no people-management responsibility. The Advisor leads through technical authority, client relationships and the quality of their work.

H2Safety’s work spans regulatory, technical and client-relationship disciplines, and this role draws on all three. The Advisor will begin within the ERP Services team, working alongside experienced Client Relationship Managers (CRMs), to learn H2Safety methodology, delivery standards and client history before taking on an independent portfolio of key accounts.

Knowledge

  • Canadian regulatory landscape (AER, BCER, CER, ECCC, including the Environmental Emergency Regulations) and relevant standards (CSA Z246.2, CSA Z1600, NFPA 1600, ISO 22301); awareness of U.S. and international counterparts.
  • ERP frameworks, hazard analysis, emergency preparedness programs and audit readiness.
  • Incident Command System (ICS) structure and application in client emergency response.
  • Project delivery fundamentals: scope, schedule, budget and margin.
  • H2Safety products and services, including the H2CommandCentre platform (to be developed during onboarding).
  • Client-focused judgement to act as a trusted advisor in high-stakes and contentious situations.
  • Compliance-first approach balanced with commercial awareness.
  • Adopts H2Safety templates, QA and project management frameworks, and proposes improvements through the established process.
  • Collaborative across functions without relying on positional authority.
  • Disciplined documentation and defensibility of advice.
  • Adaptability within a multinational environment (part of the SGS group, cross-border collaboration).
  • Self-directed; identifies and proposes initiatives without being asked.

Skills

  • Building and maintaining client relationships at operations, HSE and executive levels; managing expectations and negotiating scope.
  • Clear technical writing: ERPs, advisories, regulatory submissions, methodologies and proposals.
  • Presenting to client executives, regulators and industry forums.
  • Translating regulatory requirements into practical plans, templates and training.
  • Prioritizing multiple accounts and deadlines without direct supervision.
  • Proficiency with MS Office and project management tools (e.g., MS Project, Smartsheet, Asana, JIRA).
Qualifications

Experience

  • 12+ years of progressive experience in emergency management, emergency response planning, or technical risk in energy or other high-hazard industries.
  • At least 5 years in a senior SME or advisory role interfacing directly with client executives and regulators.
  • Direct experience developing and maintaining ERPs under Canadian regulatory requirements (e.g., AER Directive 071, BCER, CER).
  • Working knowledge of hazard assessment, emergency planning zone (EPZ) determination, dispersion and consequence analysis.
  • Experience designing, facilitating or evaluating emergency exercises, and holding ITS roles in exercises or live incidents.
  • Track record of managing multiple client accounts and multi-phase projects concurrently.
  • Experience supporting business development: proposals, RFP responses, scoping and pricing

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Emergency Management, Environmental Science, or a related discipline (required).
  • Master’s degree in Engineering, Business, Emergency Management, or a related field (asset).

Professional Credentials

  • ICS 300 certification (required); ICs 400 (asset).
  • Certified Emergency Manager (CEM), Business Continuity credential (ABCP, DRI International), or PMP (asset).
