Job summary

Suncor Energy Inc. seeks a senior Electrical Engineer to support the safe, reliable operation of the Base Plant high-voltage transmission/distribution system in Fort McMurray, AB.

You will provide near-real-time engineering support for system performance, troubleshooting, and outage risk management. The role requires 9+ years in heavy industrial electrical engineering, strong expertise with LV/MV equipment and protection systems, and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams on brownfield

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering and PE registration or eligibility with APEGA.
• 9+ years in maintenance, reliability, or operations in heavy industrial environments (oil sands, refining, or petrochemical).
• Strong expertise with LV/MV motors, VFDs, MCCs, switchgear, transformers, UPS.
• Protection and control systems knowledge including motor/VFD application, loading, cooling, harmonics and power quality.
• Experience developing scopes, specifications, work packages, repair strategies, and equipment replacement plans; brownfield support.
• Knowledge of CSA, IEEE, NFPA, and NETA standards; MOC, risk assessment, investigations, and corrective actions.

Responsibilities

• Provide senior electrical engineering support for failures, outages, and reliability improvements.
• Lead motors, VFDs, MCCs, switchgear, transformers, UPS, relays, and distribution equipment as technical lead.
• Analyze operating trends, diagnostics, and test results to identify root causes and actions.
• Develop scopes, specs, and replacement/upgrade strategies; support modifications and commissioning.
• Support repairs, upgrades, obsolescence, and turnover through design, vendor reviews, and start-up.
• Advance preventive, predictive, and condition-based maintenance strategies and outage planning.
• Lead or participate in investigations, MOC, PSSRs, and ensure safety/regulatory compliance.
