Job summary

Kinectrics Inc. in Toronto is seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer (New Build Design) to lead engineering design and analysis for nuclear power plant systems across new build projects. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure compliance with nuclear codes and licensing requirements.

The role requires a P.Eng. in Ontario and 8+ years of relevant experience, including nuclear industry exposure.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Graduate degree in Electrical/I&C, or Nuclear Engineering (or equivalent).
  • Minimum 8+ years of relevant engineering experience, including at least 5 years within the nuclear industry.
  • Demonstrated experience in engineering design and project delivery in a regulated environment.
  • Strong understanding of nuclear power plant systems and design principles.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and perform engineering design and analysis for nuclear power plant systems, structures, and components across new build projects and modifications.
  • Support engineering design development through conceptual, preliminary, and detailed design phases, ensuring alignment with nuclear safety and regulatory requirements.
  • Provide engineering and design oversight, including independent technical reviews and vendor design evaluations.
  • Interface with construction, procurement partners, and utility stakeholders throughout the project lifecycle to deliver practical engineering solutions.
  • Prepare and review technical specifications, and engineering documentation in accordance with applicable nuclear codes and standards.
  • Support design integration across multidisciplinary teams, ensuring consistency with system design, safety case requirements, and licensing basis.
  • Support assessments of potential reactor technologies, including assessing designs against applicable laws, regulations, codes, and standards.
  • Participate with design inputs in hazard assessments, safety evaluations, and licensing support activities for new build projects.
  • Provide field and site support, including design clarifications and constructability input during project execution.
  • Support proposal development, scope definition, and technical planning for new build opportunities.
  • Mentor junior staff and contribute to continuous improvement of design engineering practices.
  • Stay current with developments in nuclear design standards, codes, and regulatory expectations.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Accountabilities: How You Will Make an Impact

What You Need to Succeed
  • Bachelor’s or Graduate degree in Electrical/I&C, or Nuclear Engineering (or equivalent).
  • Minimum 8+ years of relevant engineering experience, including at least 5 years within the nuclear industry.
  • Demonstrated experience in engineering design and project delivery in a regulated environment.
  • Strong understanding of nuclear power plant systems and design principles.
  • Experience with CANDU reactor technology is strongly preferred. Knowledge of Pressurized Water Reactors (PWRs) and/or advanced reactor technologies (e.g., SMRs) is considered an asset.
  • Nuclear New Build or Nuclear Refurbishment experience will be considered a strong asset.
  • Candidates must demonstrate working knowledge and application/familiarity with relevant nuclear codes, standards, and regulatory requirements, including:
  • CSA C22.1 and C22.2 series plus applicable IEEE standards for nuclear electrical system interface.
  • CSA N289, N291 as applicable for seismic interface and interactions.
  • Technical competencies in the following areas:
  • Experience in system design, engineering analysis, and design documentation development.
  • Ability to perform or coordinate technical evaluations, design reviews, and independent assessments.
  • Familiarity with engineering change control processes and project governance.
  • Experience working with multidisciplinary teams including across mechanical, civil, computer, I&C disciplines.
  • Structures, systems and component (SSC) design, including specifications, flow diagrams and drawings.
  • Knowledge of relevant engineering tools and analysis software is considered an asset.
  • Experience in the use of electrical analysis and design tools such as ETAP and JAMA Connect is considered a strong asset.
  • Experience in voltage drop calculation, electrical equipment sizing, load list.
  • Experience in overall plant wide electrical system design, SLD, and classes of power.
  • Experience in performing condition assessments of electrical equipment such as transformers, breakers, switch gears, electric motors, motor control centers, generators and other power plant equipment.
  • Familiarity with nuclear quality assurance programs (CSA N286, N299).
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in Ontario.
  • Proven ability to work in a project-driven environment, managing competing priorities across scope, schedule, and quality constraints.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including preparation of technical reports, proposals, and client-facing documentation.
  • Demonstrated ability to interface effectively with clients, regulators, and multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Experience supporting licensing, safety case development, or regulatory submissions (e.g., CNSC) is an asset.
  • Familiarity with international nuclear codes and standards is considered an asset.
  • Must have experience in a project driven environment with the capability to meet deadlines, work under pressure, and within project constraints (time, cost, quality).
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize assigned work and to coordinate multiple activities efficiently.
  • Must have a strong attention to detail and to quality assurance requirements.
  • Demonstrated experience in preparation of reports, proposals, recommendations and presentations for internal and external clients.
  • Good time management skills and demonstrated capability to interface effectively with and gain the trust of station customers.
  • OPG and Bruce Power Security Clearance is an asset.
  • Travel to site(s) may be required.

This role requires the successful candidate to complete the security clearance process. The security clearance process is conducted in accordance with applicable regulatory requirements of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) and the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) and may take up to 12 months to complete.
