Job summary

Kinectrics, a Bowen BWX Technologies subsidiary, invites applications for a Senior Engineer, Software Design in Toronto, Ontario. You will design and lead software for electro‑mechanical automation in the nuclear sector, collaborating with mechanical, I&C, and electrical teams to define requirements and deliver robust solutions.

The role requires 6+ years in safety‑critical software design, 3+ years as a technical lead, and a P.Eng. in Ontario.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Computer, or related Engineering discipline.
  • 6+ years of experience in software design engineering in nuclear or other safety-critical, highly regulated industries.
  • 3+ years of experience as technical lead for software and/or computer engineering teams.
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation in Ontario.
  • Experience designing and implementing control and monitoring systems using PLCs, HMIs, and Data Historians (Schneider, Allen-Bradley, Siemens, GE, Omron, etc.).
  • Hands‑on experience with SCADA systems or Distributed Control Systems (DCS).
  • Proficiency in IEC 61131-3 programming languages for industrial automation.
  • Working knowledge of electrical and safety standards for automated equipment.
  • Strong understanding of electro‑mechanical systems, with the ability to test, troubleshoot, and debug complex automation solutions.
  • Experience in software design within regulated industries such as nuclear, aerospace, or chemical plants.
  • Experience in preparing and reviewing design documentation across all stages of SDLC for CAT I-IV software in accordance with CSA N290.14 and N286.7
  • Strong understanding of nuclear power plant design, operation, and modernization programs, including control system upgrades
  • Thorough knowledge of Engineering Change Control (ECC) processes in nuclear environments
  • Hands‑on experience with software engineering lifecycle practices, including configuration management and verification & validation (V&V)
  • Experience in project management and interfacing with and coordinating activities of multi‑disciplinary teams
  • Excellent communication, stakeholder management, and problem‑solving skills, with a strong commitment to quality
  • Occasional travel to other Kinectrics’ locations and client sites will be required.
  • Experience working on‑site at nuclear generating stations; holding a valid OPG and Bruce Power Security Clearance is an asset.
  • Experience performing condition and performance assessments of digital systems and cybersecurity/OT assets
  • Experience supporting refurbishment or operating (capital) projects in nuclear facilities
  • Strong leadership mindset with the ability to develop and motivate high‑performing teams
  • Strong business acumen, ability to collaborate with management to lead diverse team in fulfilling internal and external priorities

Responsibilities

  • Support project activities, including procedure writing, outage preparation, and project documentation closure.

  • Provide engineering and troubleshooting support at Kipling labs, vendor sites, and client locations.
  • Perform on-site commissioning and troubleshooting.
  • Conduct procurement engineering and vendor coordination for projects.
  • Identify and implement process improvements in technical and project management areas.
  • Participate in industry associations, conferences, and technical committees, and contribute to technical publications.

Salary Range: $120,000 - $145,000

What You Need to Succeed

This role requires the successful candidate to complete the security clearance process. The security clearance process is conducted in accordance with applicable regulatory requirements of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) and the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) and may take up to 12 months to complete.
