Qualifications

Emera Newfoundland & Labrador (ENL), a wholly owned subsidiary of Emera Inc. (EMA-TSX), operates the Maritime Link, an integrated set of transmission assets that deliver renewable electricity from Muskrat Falls in Labrador through Newfoundland to Nova Scotia. Operational since January 2018, the Maritime Link delivers reliable, clean electricity to Nova Scotians and contributes to energy sharing and grid reliability in Atlantic Canada while also helping achieve provincial and national clean energy targets.

With office and site locations in Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland & Labrador, the 500-megawatt HVdc Maritime Link includes switchyards, two converter stations, 400km of overhead transmission lines, two transition compounds, two grounding sites and two 170km submarine cables.

Reporting to the Senior Manager, Engineering, the Senior Electrical Engineer will play a critical role in ensuring the reliability and performance of key energy infrastructure. The successful candidate joins us at a time when a number of technology projects are on the horizon, and when inspection and maintenance strategies for the Maritime Link are evolving. You will have the opportunity to contribute to driving improvements and efficiencies across our assets.

Key elements of this role include :

  • Accountability for the asset management strategy for the Maritime Link HVdc assets and auxiliary systems.
  • Supporting of the site operations team (in-person and remote) in Nova Scotia and Newfoundland & Labrador and participating in on-call support including troubleshooting, root cause analysis and related reports. Interfacing with stakeholders and communicating lessons learned as required.
  • Updating asset maintenance plans and driving improvements in maintenance methods.
  • Developing, leading and implementing individual operations and capital initiatives, such as technology and reliability projects.
  • Participating in shutdown planning and other planning functions as required, including collaboration with the System Operators in Nova Scotia and Newfoundland & Labrador.
  • Keeping abreast of industry knowledge and advancements in electrical engineering and other relevant technical fields.
  • Supervising and mentoring one full-time engineer and overseeing contractors.
  • Fully participating and engaging in ENL’s safety and environment programs and supporting ongoing initiatives such as Strategic Asset Management.

What skills will make you successful?

As the ideal candidate you recognize yourself in most of the following qualifications, competencies and skills :

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering and full membership (or eligible for membership) with Engineers Nova Scotia, and / or The Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Newfoundland and Labrador.
  • Minimum of seven years relevant experience. Experience in electric utility operations, HVdc facilities, and / or Control and Protection.
  • Knowledge of cyber security, particularly NERC CIP compliance, is considered an asset.
  • Safety leadership and experience in maintenance shutdown planning will be considered an asset.
  • You are a self-starter with excellent organizational and analytical skills who can function effectively in a team environment.
  • Strong communication skills and a commitment to personal development are required.
  • Valid Driver’s License, and a willingness to provide after-hours consultation and emergency power restoration work.
  • Regular travel between Maritime Link facilities and offices.
