Nunavut is Canada’s newest and largest territory and has the fastest growing economy in the country. With breathtaking landscapes and amazing adventure opportunities, you will find excitement not only in your career, but in your free time as well. If the thought of dog sledding, snowmobiling, kayaking, ice fishing, or exploring a rich culture filled with distinct artwork and music sounds enticing, Nunavut is the place for you.

In accordance with the Government of Nunavut’s Remote Hiring Policy (GN HRM 501), this position is being advertised in the home community and is eligible for remote work across Canada. If remote option is requested this position will be offered on a 3-year term.

Qulliq Energy Corporation

Qulliq Energy Corporation (QEC) is entrusted to provide safe, reliable power to all customers in Nunavut. Owned by the Government of Nunavut and operated as an arms-length territorial corporation, QEC is the sole provider of electricity and district heating in Nunavut. In comparison to other utilities in Canada, QEC faces unique challenges as it operates 25 stand-alone diesel power generation facilities and distribution systems located in each of the territory’s communities.

Position: Electrical Engineer (QEC-24-046)

Based out of Iqaluit, Nunavut or eligible for remote work, and reporting to the Manager, Electrical Generation Planning, the Electrical Engineer is responsible for providing technical and electrical system design services throughout the project cycle from conceptual design to commissioning. Additionally, this role is also responsible for selecting materials and supplies during the design phase, defining design criteria and specifications, determining specific technical details of design, and stamping drawings and documents. Work is structured by national standards, including the Canadian Electrical Code (CEC), Canadian Standards Association (CSA), National Building Code (NBC), National Fire Code (NFC), Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and other relevant safety standards, including Corporate and territorial policies and procedures.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provides technical and electrical system design services throughout the project cycle from conceptual design to commissioning.
  • Provides detailed project costing for electrical system upgrades and construction of new facilities.
  • Prepares tender specifications, tender documentation, technical drawings, and cost estimates for projects.
  • Prepares assessment studies for potential upgrades, rehabilitation projects or construction of new facilities.
  • Liaises with consultants and contractors to ensure efficient planning for construction projects.
  • Prepares cost analysis to ensure projects fall within budgetary requirements.
  • Collaborates with the Project Accountant to ensure capital projects and recoverable projects are on schedule and within budget.
  • Provides rationale for cost over-runs or adjustments to project timelines.
  • Coordinates with the Finance department to ensure material resources procurement is on schedule for project launch.
  • Researches and develops electrical technical and system standards.
  • Answers technical questions from other departments and contacts.
  • Directs the technical quality of the work of engineers-in-training, as required.

Required Qualifications Include:

  • Registered Professional Engineer (P. Eng.), with immediate eligibility for registration with NAPEG.
  • Five (5) years’ engineering experience in the public utility industry.
  • Experience in full scope project management, from inception to commissioning.

Assets:

  • Knowledge of Nunavut, the land, language, and culture.
  • The ability to communicate in Inuktitut, Inuinnaqtun and/or French.

We offer a competitive starting salary range of $116,485.16 to $138,089.93, a northern living allowance of $16,008 per annum, a comprehensive benefits package including a defined benefit pension program. Accommodation is not guaranteed at this point and will be allocated when available. This position is included in the Nunavut Employee’s Union.

Applications for this competition may be considered for future employment opportunities with QEC.
