Job summary

The City of Niagara Falls is seeking a Senior Ecologist to manage natural heritage resources and support environmental legislation alignment with provincial and city initiatives. You will conduct ecological assessments and provide expert input on development applications and policy planning projects.

Responsibilities include leading environmental policy development, coordinating with planning teams, and providing technical guidance on Environmental Assessments as needed.

Qualifications

• University degree in Environmental Planning or Environmental Sciences.
• Minimum five years work experience.
• Certification in Ontario Wetland Evaluation System (OWES) and Ecological Land Classification experience.
• Registered Professional Planner (RPP) designation and OPPI accreditation is considered an asset.
• Working knowledge of PPS 2024 and environmental policy frameworks.
• Knowledge of provincial environmental legislation and approvals.
• Knowledge of planning legislation and provincial/regional guidelines.
• Knowledge of compensation policy/design/monitoring is an asset.
• Class “G” driver’s licence.

Responsibilities

• Conduct ecological assessments for municipal projects using accepted protocols (Ontario Wetland Evaluation System, Ecological Land Classification).
• Lead the review of planning applications relative to environmental and natural heritage planning matters (OPA, ZBA, subdivisions, site plans).
• Review Environmental Impact Studies, Environmental Site Assessments and related studies.
• Conduct site visits for development and policy initiatives in the City.
• Prepare Terms of Reference for development applications and long-term planning documents.
