PCC has invested billions of dollars in an asset-rich portfolio of upstream, midstream and downstream operations. In Alberta, this includes our MacKay River and Dover oilsands projects, Duvernay Shale Gas and a 50% interest in the Grand Rapids Pipeline. Senior Drilling Engineer - Duvernay

PetroChina Canada is currently recruiting for a Senior Drilling Engineer to join out Duvernay team.

Reporting to the Manager, Drilling & Completions the Senior Drilling Engineer is responsible for the planning and coordination of engineering efforts within the drilling team and will support PCC’s drilling technology, initiatives, planning and execution for PetroChina Canada’s Duvernay Shale Gas project, with a focus on HSSE, time and cost effectiveness.

Accountabilities

  • Support the creation and review of detailed designs of Duvernay horizontal wells focusing on directional design, casing/liner design, wellhead equipment design, borehole stability analysis, drilling fluids selection, surface, intermediate, production casing cementing quality control
  • Design and develop in-house drilling programs and cost estimates
  • Spend monitoring and forecasting, ensuring real-time management stewarding to budget allocations. This will include vendor PO monitoring and modifications as necessary.
  • Strong involvement in preparations, evaluation and review of all tendering processes, preparing/finalizing contracts, and/or coordinating purchasing/buying. Including but not limited to AFE/PR/PO/Invoicing monitoring and associated procedures.
  • Evaluate and recommend new technological developments
  • Travel to wellsite locations as required to be involved with drilling operations, practices and critical interfaces
  • Conduct/coordinate hydraulics evaluations, torque and drag analysis and drilling optimization studies
  • Prepare drilling programs and stick diagrams following Industry Recommended Practices
  • Use real time data analytics platforms to help drive continuous improvement initiatives
  • Track capital spend by providing budgetary reviews during the execution phase of projects
  • Facilitate After Action Reviews to highlight key findings, accomplishments, challenges and future opportunities
  • Participate in rig start-up, pre-spud and safety stand down meetings
  • Lead the planning and designs of the Duvernay annual drilling programs and provide support during execution
  • Maintain high quality planning, technical design, operating practices and cost estimates for vertical, deviated and horizontal wells
  • Monitor regulatory requirements and ensure that PCC is operating within both internal and external guidelines
  • Oversee vendors/contractors to carry out drilling activities as applicable
  • Coordinate with external parties such as AER for regulatory requirements and vendors to review design and execution strategies
  • Provide daily operational direction to effectively manage safety, cost, schedule and quality
  • Review HSSE guidelines and communicate expectations and changes to onsite supervisors and vendors
  • Support well control and emergency planning activities

Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in Engineering from a recognized educational institute, in a relevant discipline
  • Registered with APEGA, or the ability to be registered as a Professional Engineer
  • 12+ years’ drilling/completions experience with a focus in deep tight gas (well pair placement and design, slant/self-mobile rig selection, etc.)
  • Additional field operational experience preferred
  • Knowledgeable in regulatory requirements, industry recommended best practices, well control procedures and licensing
  • Highly motivated team player who is willing and able to mentor junior staff
  • Ability to forge, grow and maintain positive relationships with multiple groups
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Able to manage multiple priorities simultaneously and meet the time demands of unpredictable activities; capable of handling pressure and challenges in a dynamic business environment
  • Ability to work within tight deadlines and prioritize work to achieve them
  • Strong analytical, critical thinking, troubleshooting, problem-solving skills, and a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail
