Job Summary:
The Drilling Engineer is responsible for providing engineering support to the Drilling Operations and engineering group. This position is planned and executed in accordance with CCL, Client, government policies, standards, and regulatory requirements.
Responsibilities:
- Planning and programming drilling operations safely, cost-effectively, and in compliance with all applicable regulatory requirements.
- Preparing accurate programs, detailed cost estimates, and lump sum proposals.
- Conducting detailed area reviews, analyzing offset well data and new technologies to develop optimized drilling techniques and designs.
- Preparing and presenting peer reviews on area development and well designs.
- Reviewing well files to generate drilling history.
- Collaborating with asset teams to design, plan, and budget projects effectively.
- Managing the timing and scheduling of drilling projects and communicating updates to management, vendors, and disciplines involved.
- Supporting drilling operations and assisting the Operations Superintendent with daily planning and vendor performance analysis.
- Completing project reviews and lookbacks to evaluate and optimize project effectiveness.
- Documenting learning events and incorporating lessons into future projects.
- Staying current with drilling technology to ensure timely application.
- Assisting SCM specialists with procurement of drilling services and materials.
- Traveling to field locations as scheduled.
- Determining the best methods for drilling oil or gas wells, ensuring safety, efficiency, and environmental considerations.
- Supporting the Drilling Manager as required.
- Documenting major trouble time events and sharing insights with the Drilling Team.
- Conducting offset research before spudding each location and ensuring well designs align with COSL standards.
- Creating cost estimates and drilling programs for each new well.
- Working with the Drilling Superintendent to ensure well execution aligns with plans.
- Ensuring field Drilling Supervisors accurately capture costs and information in daily reports.
Experience & Skills:
- 5 to 10 years of relevant drilling engineering or operations experience.
- Professional engineering license.
- Current membership in good standing with APEGA.
- Strong project management, communication, organization, and time management skills.
- Ability to contribute effectively within a multidisciplinary asset team.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Experience with SAGD drilling operations (preferred but not necessary).
- Knowledge of safety regulations.
- Proficiency with software: Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Landmark/Compass, Wellview, Petrosight.
- Strong problem-solving and technical skills.
- Working knowledge of casing design, torque and drag, anti-collision, well control, and MPD.
- Familiarity with AER directives.
Working Conditions:
Primarily office-based with occasional field visits.
Required Tickets:
- Prior to agreement: APEGA membership.
- Prior to field visits: Valid Class 5 Driver's License, Petroleum Safety Training, Standard First Aid with CPR C & AED, H2S, WHMIS, TDG, a valid 5-panel alcohol and drug test (qualified lab test, not POCT), BSO/CSO.
