Job summary

Westland Insurance Group Ltd. in Surrey, BC seeks a Senior Data Engineer to join the Data Platform & Operations team. The role is hybrid from the Surrey head office and focuses on building scalable data platforms and governed data foundations.

The ideal candidate has 7+ years in data engineering, strong SQL and PySpark skills, and experience with Azure Databricks, Fabric, and Delta Lake to enable analytics, reporting and AI initiatives across the organization.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of experience in data engineering designing and building enterprise data platforms, pipelines and data products.
• Strong expertise in SQL, Spark (PySpark), Azure Databricks, Microsoft Fabric and cloud data engineering practices.
• Experience with data lakes, warehouses, lakehouse architectures and analytics-ready datasets.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop and maintain scalable data pipelines and data products for reporting, analytics and AI initiatives.
• Build solutions using Microsoft Fabric, Azure Databricks, Spark, SQL and Delta Lake while applying modern data architectures.
• Deliver trusted, governed datasets with data quality, lineage, security and access controls.
• Partner with data and technology groups to create innovative solutions addressing business challenges.

Expected Compensation: The expected annual hiring range for this role is $120,000 to $147,000 based on a 37.5-hour work week. Actual offered salary will depend on the successful candidate's qualifications and experience, as well as market conditions for the role and internal equity.

• You embrace continuous learning and stay current with evolving technologies, and industry certifications such as Databricks Certified Data Engineer Professional or Azure Data Engineer Associate (DP-203), as well as experience within the P&C insurance industry, are considered assets.

Once here, you'll:

• Design, develop, and maintain scalable data pipelines and data products that support reporting, analytics, AI initiatives, and enterprise decision-making.
• Build and optimize solutions using Microsoft Fabric, Azure Databricks, Apache Spark (PySpark), SQL, and Delta Lake while implementing modern data architectures and modelling practices.
• Deliver trusted, governed datasets by implementing data quality, lineage, security, and access controls that support enterprise data management standards.
• Partner with Data Products & Enablement, Data Business Partners, and technology teams to develop innovative solutions that address business challenges and opportunities.
• Monitor, maintain, and continuously improve enterprise data platforms through automation, alerting, troubleshooting, and performance optimization to ensure reliability, scalability, and cost efficiency.
• Champion engineering excellence through CI/CD, testing, documentation, version control, and secure development practices.
• Provide technical leadership and mentorship while driving continuous improvement across data platforms, processes, and technologies.
