We are looking for a seasoned insurance coverage and defence lawyer, with an interest and experience in speciality commercial insurance work (both coverage and defence), with an aptitude to litigation and dispute resolution. As a lawyer at our Firm, you will engage in matters involving all aspects of litigation including reporting to clients, questionings, mediations, arbitrations, trials and appeals. Description

We are looking for a seasoned insurance coverage and defence lawyer, with an interest and experience in speciality commercial insurance work (both coverage and defence), with an aptitude to litigation and dispute resolution. As a lawyer at our Firm, you will engage in matters involving all aspects of litigation including reporting to clients, questionings, mediations, arbitrations, trials and appeals. You will have the opportunity to work in an entrepreneurial atmosphere and as part of a collegial team, all the while further developing your career.

Hybrid work mode with a minimum of two days at the Calgary office.

Key Responsibilities

  • Providing legal analysis and advice in the area of litigation, with a focus on specialty lines of insurance, professional negligence claims, construction professional litigation, and other sectors including insurance coverage related to municipal liability, police liability, occupier's liability, liquor liability, property insurance, and product liability;
  • In conjunction with partners, having carriage of coverage and litigation files, from initial assessment, pleadings, motions, discovery through mediation, pre-trial, and trial;
  • Analyzing legal and factual issues and advising clients;
  • Leading questionings;
  • Preparing correspondence to opposing counsel and clients;
  • Maintaining relations with the insurers and insureds;
  • Reviewing documents in preparation for litigation;
  • Submitting filings to the court;
  • Appearing in court, independently, to argue motions, attend pre-trials and mediations;
  • Assisting with, or conducting solo preparations and attending independently trials or other adjudicative hearings;
  • Attending Alberta or other Canadian Bar Association events for the purpose of professional and business development opportunities;
  • Performing certain tasks related to the practice management side of the legal work;
  • Developing his/her overall set of skills in an on-going fashion;
  • Meeting other related business needs or priorities as they may arise from time to time.


Skills

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Graduate from a recognized University / Common Law School
  • Licence to practice law in the Province of Alberta or another Canadian Province as a member in good standing with the Law Society of Alberta or another Provincial Law Society.
  • 8+ years of post-qualification coverage and litigation experience;
  • Relevant experience with professional indemnity - including design professionals and engineers, insurance brokers, accountants, with trial experience and some coverage experience;
  • Exceptional legal writing and communication skills;
  • Sound judgement and legal reasoning, excellent analytical skills and creativity in solving problems;
  • Demonstrated ability to develop strategies, present a clear plan to the client, and communicate instructions rigorously and precisely;
  • Proven advocacy talent;
  • High integrity and intellectual rigor;
  • Strong interpersonal skills;
  • Entrepreneurial spirit and keen interest in building client relationships;
  • Able to work independently, as well as in a team.
