Contracts Specialist - Mining

On behalf of a well-established mining client, we are seeking an experienced contracts specialist to oversee all aspects of contract management, including pre-contract activities (sourcing, RFI, RFP, negotiation) and post-execution, ensuring compliance with legal and organizational requirements, and contributing to successful project execution.

Responsibilities

1. Manage contracts for mining operations, including equipment supply, maintenance services, and labor, ensuring compliance with terms and mining regulations.
2. Collaborate with mine managers, engineers, and contractors to align contract deliverables with production schedules and operational needs.
3. Identify and mitigate risks related to contract performance, supply chain disruptions, or safety violations, escalating critical issues to leadership.
4. Maintain accurate records of contracts, amendments, change orders, and safety compliance documentation specific to mining operations.
5. Monitor contract-related expenses (e.g., equipment rentals, drilling services), ensuring alignment with mine budgets and production targets.
6. Act as the primary contact for contractors, suppliers, and regulatory bodies, ensuring clear communication on operational and contractual matters.
7. Ensure all contracted work adheres to mine safety standards (e.g., MSHA or provincial equivalents) and environmental regulations.
8. Address contract disputes or performance gaps promptly to minimize downtime and operational impacts.

Qualifications

1. Minimum of 5–7 years in contract management, with at least 3 years in the mining industry.
2. Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field; a diploma in contract management may substitute with sufficient experience.
3. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with experience drafting reports and presenting to stakeholders.
4. Proven track record overseeing contracts during operational phases (e.g., extraction, processing, equipment maintenance) in a producing mine.
5. Deep understanding of mining-specific contracts, including terms for heavy equipment, service agreements, and labor outsourcing.
6. Familiarity with cost structures like cost-per-tonne or cost-per-meter drilled.
7. Working knowledge of Canadian mining regulations such as the Mining Act (provincial variations, e.g., Ontario), federal environmental standards (e.g., Fisheries Act), and safety frameworks (e.g., Occupational Health and Safety Act).
