Job summary

Rising Edge Group is seeking a Senior Commissioning Technologist to lead commissioning, testing, and maintenance of high‑voltage power equipment in the field. You will mentor junior technologists and set up test equipment on-site, ensuring safety and adherence to industry best practices.

Based in Calgary, you may travel within Alberta and beyond. A diploma or degree in electrical engineering and 4+ years of field testing experience are required, with familiarity in substations up to 500kV.

Qualifications

  • Diploma in Electrical Engineering Technology or Degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • Minimum of 4+ years of experience in Field Testing and Commissioning.
  • Hands-on experience in substations (600V to 500kV) required.
  • Familiar with power transformers, high voltage switches, breakers, CTs and PTs, NGR, and Capbank.
  • Experience with Omicron, Doble, AcSELerator, Siemens Digsi, GE Enervista is an asset.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Strong commitment to safety, environmental, and health practices.
  • Valid Class 5 driver's license required.
  • Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions.
  • Willing to travel and work out of town on rotational schedules.

Responsibilities

  • Promote and maintain a strong safety culture alongside all members of the construction crew.
  • Commission and test high voltage equipment such as circuit breakers, transformers, switches, CTs and PTs.
  • Commission protection and control relays such as SEL, GE, Siemens and ABB.
  • Interpret electrical drawings and schematics, analyze test results, and recommend corrective actions.
  • Supervise, mentor and train junior technicians.
  • Operate standard and specialized test equipment to diagnose performance of power delivery equipment on-site.

What You'll Do

Reporting to theCommissioning Manager, the SeniorCommissioning Technologist is responsible for commissioning, testing and maintaining primary and secondary power equipment in the field. This includesmaintainingmedium-to-high-voltage substation power delivery equipment such as breakers, switchgears, circuit breakers,relaysand transformers. The Senior Commissioning Technologist role also involves mentoring and educatingjunior technologistsincluding reading and interpreting prints, riskmanagementstrategies and promoting industry best practices. The SeniorCommissioning Technologist also plays a leading role in setting up and operating both standard and specialized test equipment to diagnose and analyze the performance of power delivery equipment on-site.

Key Responsibilities

The responsibilities include, but may not be limited to:

  • Promote and maintain a strong safety culture alongside all members of the construction crew

  • Commission and test high voltage equipment such as Circuit breakers, Transformers, manual and motor operated switches, Current Transformers, Voltage Transformers, CapacitorBanksand circuit switchers.

  • Commission protection and control relays such as SEL, GE,Siemensand ABB.

  • Commission control circuits for protection,indicationand monitoring systems.

  • Perform acceptance and maintenance testing on electrical equipment ranging from 600v to 500kV

  • Installation, commissioning and maintenance of protection and control equipment, including SCADA in medium to high-voltage transmission substations

  • Work with protection schemes such as differential, distance, line protections, transformer protections and overcurrent protections

  • Interpret electrical drawings and schematics, analyze test results, and recommend corrective actions

  • Work with high voltage equipment such as Circuit breakers, transformers, switches and control circuits for protection,indicationand monitoring systems

  • Supervise, mentor and train junior technicians

  • Be able to work with various types of manufacturer's test equipment:

    • Omicron CMC356, CT analyzer, Cibano, CPC100, Votano, Testrano (remove the comma after Omicron as they are all Omicron devices).
    • Doble M4100, SFRA
    • Megger megohmmeter and 10A Ductor
    • Broman 100A Ductor
    • Megger TTR
    • Dilo and SMC Gas Analyzers
    • VLF and AC Hi Pots
    • Be able to work with various types of manufacturer's test equipment:

This is a full-time, permanent position.

  • Employees based in Calgary work locally within Southern Alberta, while those based in Edmonton work locally within Northern Alberta.
  • There are also opportunities to travel to other regions if interested.
Additional Information

This position isdesignatedas safety-sensitive making employment contingent upon the successful completion of pre-employment drug and alcohol testing, as well as criminal and general background checks.

Schedule & Compensation
  • Schedule rotations include 4 days on / 4 days offor8 days on / 6 days off, etc.
  • Standard workdays are 10 hours (7:00 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.)
  • Overtime paid at time and a half after 10 hours per day and 40 hours per week
  • Out-of-town work includes either all-inclusive camp accommodations or LOA and individual accommodations (project dependent)
What We're Looking For
  • Diploma in Electrical Engineering Technology from an accredited post-secondary institution or Degree in Electrical Engineering
  • Minimum of 4+ years of experience in Field Testing and Commissioning
  • Hands-on experience in substations (600V to 500kV) required
  • Familiar with power transformers, high voltage switches, breakers,CT'sand PT's, NGR, andCapbank
  • Experiencewith testing software is considered an asset (Omicron Test Universe, Doble M4000,AcSELerator, SiemensDigsi, GEEnervista)
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Strong commitment to safety, environmental, and health practices
  • Valid Class 5 driver's license required
  • Must have the ability to work in adverse weather conditions
  • Willing to travel and work out of town and on rotational schedules
