Job summary

What You'll Do

Reporting to the Commissioning Manager, the Senior Commissioning Technologist is responsible for commissioning, testing and maintaining primary and secondary power equipment in the field. This includes maintaining medium‑to‑high‑voltage substation power delivery equipment such as breakers, switchgears, circuit breakers, relays and transformers. The Senior Commissioning Technologist also involves mentoring and educating junior technologists, reading and interpreting prints, risk management strategies and promoting industry best practices. The Senior Commissioning Technologist plays a leading role in setting up and operating both standard and specialized test equipment to diagnose and analyze the performance of power delivery equipment on‑site.

Key Responsibilities
  • Promote and maintain a strong safety culture alongside all members of the construction crew
  • Commission and test high voltage equipment such as circuit breakers, transformers, manual and motor operated switches, current transformers, voltage transformers, capacitor banks and circuit switchers
  • Commission protection and control relays (SEL, GE, Siemens, ABB)
  • Commission control circuits for protection, indication and monitoring systems
  • Perform acceptance and maintenance testing on electrical equipment ranging from 600 V to 500 kV
  • Installation, commissioning and maintenance of protection and control equipment, including SCADA in medium to high‑voltage transmission substations
  • Work with protection schemes such as differential, distance, line protections, transformer protections and overcurrent protections
  • Interpret electrical drawings and schematics, analyze test results and recommend corrective actions
  • Work with high voltage equipment such as circuit breakers, transformers, switches and control circuits for protection, indication and monitoring systems
  • Supervise, mentor and train junior technicians
  • Be able to work with various types of manufacturer's test equipment:
    • Omicron CMC356, CT analyzer, Cibano, CPC100, Votano, Testrano
    • Doble M4100, SFRA
    • Megger megohmmeter and 10 A Ductor
    • Broman 100 A Ductor
    • Megger TTR
    • Dilo and SMC gas analyzers
    • VLF and AC Hi‑Pots

Full‑time, permanent position.

  • Employees based in Calgary work locally within Southern Alberta, while those based in Edmonton work locally within Northern Alberta.
  • There are also opportunities to travel to other regions if interested.
Additional Information

This position is designated as safety‑sensitive, making employment contingent upon the successful completion of pre‑employment drug and alcohol testing, as well as criminal and general background checks.

Schedule & Compensation
  • Schedule rotations include 4 days on / 4 days off or 8 days on / 6 days off, etc.
  • Standard workdays are 10 hours (7:00 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.)
  • Overtime paid at time and a half after 10 hours per day and 40 hours per week
  • Out‑of‑town work includes either all‑inclusive camp accommodations or LOA and individual accommodations (project dependent).
Requirements

What we’re looking for:

  • Diploma in Electrical Engineering Technology from an accredited post‑secondary institution or degree in Electrical Engineering
  • Minimum of 4+ years of experience in field testing and commissioning
  • Hands‑on experience in substations (600 V to 500 kV) required
  • Familiar with power transformers, high‑voltage switches, breakers, CTs and PTs, NGR, and capbank
  • Experience with testing software considered an asset (Omicron Test Universe, Doble M4000, AcSELerator, Siemens Digsi, GE Enervista)
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Strong commitment to safety, environmental and health practices
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license required
  • Must have the ability to work in adverse weather conditions
  • Willing to travel, work out‑of‑town and on rotational schedules
