Echelon Insurance is seeking a Senior Claims Adjuster for Long Haul Trucking and Cargo to oversee complex claims across multiple provinces in Canada. The role requires deep policy and jurisdiction knowledge and collaboration with underwriting and accounting teams.

The successful candidate will guide insureds through the claims process, manage reserves, review legislation, and mentor junior staff while ensuring service excellence and timely settlements.

Qualifications

  • University degree or college diploma required.
  • CIP designation required or pursued.
  • FCIP designation preferred or in progress.

Responsibilities

  • Guide insured through claim process to achieve resolution and service excellence.
  • Provide timely written/phone communication to clients, cargo claimants, lawyers and service providers.
  • Post reserves and issue payments within authority.
  • Demonstrate deep knowledge of auto policy and applicable legislation.
  • Identify potential fraud in first- and third-party claims.
  • Review applicable cargo claim legislation and report changes.
  • Manage file diaries, notes, and documents per Technical Guides.
  • Review loss reports and coverage documentation for proper analysis.
  • Educate insureds on claim process and timelines for resolution.
  • Negotiate settlements per policy language and jurisdiction.
  • Prepare settlement proposals based on vendor assessments.
  • Collaborate with Underwriting and Accounting.
  • Provide training and mentoring to peers and juniors.

Position Details

Reporting to the Unit Manager, Casualty, Commercial Auto & CGL Claims, the Senior Claims Adjuster - Long Haul Trucking and Cargo is responsible for oversight and handling of claims involving long haul trucking and cargo policies across multiple provinces in Canada. The claims will have varying levels of complexity in a multitude of jurisdictions with priority given to more complex, high exposure files.

What You Will Do
  • Effectively guide and assist the insured through the claim process, to achieve service excellence and successful file resolution
  • Ensure immediate and effective responses are provided through written/telephone communication to the following: clients, cargo claimants, lawyers, and service providers
  • Responsible for posting reserves and issuing claims payments within authority
  • Demonstrate a deep expertise of the automobile insurance policy and applicable insurance legislation
  • Identification of potential fraud in both first-and third-party claims
  • Complete timely reviews of applicable legislation effecting cargo claims and report to management of any change
  • Manage and maintain file diaries, notes, and documents as per company Technical Guides
  • Review loss reports, letters, and documents
  • Secure policy documentation for proper coverage analysis
  • Review and authorize appropriate repair or total loss settlements within authority
  • Educate insureds on claim process, timelines, expectations for file resolution assistance
  • Negotiating settlement of various claims subject to policy language and jurisdictional legislation
  • Preparation of settlement proposals based on assessments provided by trusted vendors
  • Secure agreements for damages to cargo and third-party property based on legislation-compliant documentation and assessments from trusted vendors
  • Collaborate with peers/other departments such as Underwriting and Accounting
  • Provide ad-hoc and formalized training and mentoring to peers and junior level associates
  • Occasionally provide mentoring to personal lines associates who are seeking to further their career in the commercial operation

Salary range is not inclusive of total compensation. The expected salary range for this position will be impacted by factors such as the successful candidate’s skills, experience and working location, as well as the specific position’s business line, scope and level. Candidates with salary expectations outside of the range are encouraged to apply.

Who You Are
  • Completed University degree or college diploma
  • Completed CIP designation
  • FCIP designation or working towards completion
  • 2+ years’ experience handling personal lines auto claims
  • 5 -7 years’ experience handling commercial long-haul trucking and cargo claims
  • Ability to understand insurance contracts in various jurisdictions
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of claims settlement, policy wordings, fraud investigations, and coverage issues
  • Strong working knowledge of MS Office Suite
  • Working knowledge of Guidewire Claims Center preferred
  • Ability to identify, secure, and analyze information with attention to detail
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, problem solving, time management & negotiation skills
