Job summary

HelloFresh Canada in Toronto, ON is seeking a Senior Software Engineer (Backend) to design, build, and operate scalable backend services using Python and FastAPI. You will enhance an internal planning engine, collaborate with data analysts and planners, and contribute to an evolving, event-driven architecture leveraging AWS, Docker, and Airflow.

You will also support frontend needs for internal React applications and help drive reliability through testing and performance optimization.

Qualifications

• Hands-on experience with AI tooling (e.g., Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot).
• Strong backend experience with Python as primary language.
• Experience designing and building systems with complex business logic, including deterministic/constraint-based optimizers and MIP solvers.
• Hands-on experience building production-grade APIs with FastAPI or similar frameworks.
• Solid knowledge of relational databases and working with data across systems (PostgreSQL, Snowflake, S3).
• Experience with event-driven architecture and messaging technologies.
• Working knowledge of cloud environments, containers, and orchestration (AWS, Docker, Airflow).
• Full-stack capability with React or another modern FE framework to support application.
• Strong communication skills and a proactive, collaborative approach to working with engineers, analysts, planners, and product partners.
• Comfort with ambiguity and a mindset of continuous learning and knowledge sharing.
• Nice to have: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in CS/Engineering or related field.
• Nice to have: Experience in Fulfillment, Logistics, Production, or related field working with physical goods.
• Ownership mindset – bias to ship; product sense and data-driven decision making.

Responsibilities

• Build and co-own the Python-based algorithmic engine for automated planning, including deterministic logic and constraints.
• Design, develop, and maintain backend services using FastAPI for scalable internal APIs.
• Work end-to-end across architecture, deployment, and operations within our modern tech stack (EKS, RDS, S3, etc.).
• Collaborate with engineers, analysts, and planners to translate domain knowledge into robust system logic.
• Evolve the platform toward event-driven patterns using Kafka.
• Support frontend needs for internal React application, ensuring FE-BE integration.
• Improve reliability through automated testing, performance tuning, and thoughtful design.
• Participate in pairing, design discussions, and knowledge sharing to strengthen team ownership.
• Shape the future direction of an advanced system and its roadmap.
• Operate what you build: monitor, instrument, and iterate in production.
