Qualifications

MAJOR DUTIES

Performs a wide variety of technological functions in various aspects of mechanical and electrical engineering, primarily in support of design and development of factory automation systems. Includes preparing and writing innovative detailed proposals for potential customers, working from general automation ideas and concepts.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Required to quickly read and understand customer requests for quote.
  2. Responsible for conceptual development, pricing and writing detailed technical proposals for all types of automation equipment and projects.
  3. Responsible to present concepts, pricing and writing detailed technical proposals for all types of automation equipment and projects to various levels of customers in a clear manner that they can understand.
  4. In projects where technical complexity is large, the applications engineer will involve key members of engineering management in pricing and conceptual layout.
  5. Involves third party vendors and suppliers in the quoting process, where necessary.
  6. Travels to the customer’s site to assist in simultaneous engineering studies, working with engineering design specifications, objectives and standards.
  7. Provides sales presentations and tours to customer personnel, when required.
  8. Obtains and prepares detailed estimates of time, labor and material costs required for work areas such as product design, testing, machine building, equipment installations and manufacturing processes.
  9. Assembles and collects all necessary technical information and customer specifications from engineering and sales & marketing, in order to prepare detailed proposals.
  10. Required to write in clear, concise language to describe highly technical and complex concepts. Documents need to be well organized to capture revisions and changes as concept evolves.
  11. Makes sure proposal arrives on or before deadline date.
  12. May be assigned special projects in support of engineering and sales & marketing, as required.
  13. Engages actively in the continuous improvement process by making recommendations and taking on projects.
  14. Define scope of work adequately enough in proposal to allow project manager and project team to begin work on system.
  15. Position involves extensive use of CAD and MS Office tools.
  16. Act as a liaison between Applications Engineering and senior management.
  17. Provides coaching, mentoring, supervision, training, and guidance to Applications personnel that are assigned to them by the Applications Manager.
  18. Ensure overall quality of work done by assigned personnel including adherence to SOP.
  19. Provides feedback and constructive criticism to assigned Applications personnel as well as to the Applications Manager for the purpose of Performance Evaluation.
  20. May be requested to assist the department manager in annual performance evaluations and interview of new personnel.
  21. Distribution of work, and coordinating of workloads of assigned Applications personnel on specific tasks or projects.
  22. Develops proposals and provides design support related to construction of CSA B51 and CSA N285.0 pressure boundary components within the ATS Certificate of Authorization as required.
  23. Strictly follow CSA N285/NQA Quality requirements as defined within the manual and procedures.
  24. Approval of concepts, budgets and pricing within parameters set by Applications Manager.
  25. Ensure that all business activities are performed with the highest ethical standards and in compliance with the ATS Code of Business Conduct.
  26. Adhere to all health and safety rules and procedures.
QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

A post-secondary diploma or degree in mechanical design, engineering or equivalent.

Experience:

Five years’ experience in mechanical or electrical engineering support, preferably in an automation environment. Must have a working knowledge of robotics, machine controls and manufacturing processes and be able to keep abreast of leading-edge technology. In addition, must be familiar with the use of MS Office, AutoCAD, Solidworks or similar drawing package. An ability to present ideas, concepts and pricing information in a clear, concise manner suitable for technical audiences is essential. Previous supervisory experience would be considered an asset.
