Position Summary

The Senior Accounting Supervisor contributes to the success of JIBC by bringing the technical and theoretical knowledge of the accounting profession as well as strong leadership skills to the Finance team.

The Senior Accounting Supervisor assists the Assistant Controller in accounting for operations and the financial position of JIBC and ensures timely and accurate financial reporting. As a key member of the Finance Division, this role is responsible for applying advanced accounting principles, including Public Sector Accounting Standards and Canadian GAAP for the education sector to ensure the accurate reporting of assets, liabilities, revenues, and expenses. The position plays a vital role in month-end and year-end processes, leading accounts receivable and payable activities, performing reconciliations, and supporting timely financial reporting in collaboration with the Senior Financial Services Supervisor. The incumbent provides expert guidance on financial policies, internal controls, and tax legislation—particularly GST/HST/PST—while also supporting internal clients across divisions with budgeting and expense allocation. This position requires in-depth knowledge of JIBC’s financial policies, procedures and systems, and contributes to key reporting requirements, including the Statement of Financial Information (SOFI) report and year-end documentation such as T4As and T2200s.

The Senior Accounting Supervisor oversees the supervision of the accounting team. This includes providing direction and coaching to the AR Registration and to the AR/AP Clerks to meet deliverables to internal and external stakeholders, promoting teamwork and collaboration amongst staff. The role involves supervising and coordinating their work, including hiring, training, evaluating, and providing ongoing performance feedback. Other responsibilities include reviewing and posting AP/AR batches, ensuring compliance with internal control procedures and auditor requirements, and overseeing expenditure commitments such as purchase orders, contracts, and leases. The position also maintains cash control procedures across various divisions, monitors collections and stale-dated transactions, and ensures timely reconciliation of ledger accounts. Additionally the role maintains documentation and training materials, protects confidential financial information, and performs other assigned duties.

In addition, the Senior Accounting Supervisor is responsible for business process and technological systems improvements relating to AR and AP transactions. The role involves providing user maintenance and support for financial information software, as well as training for new users in Unit 4 Accounts Receivable (AR) and Accounts Payable (AP) self-serve systems, as well as Access Direct. The Senior Accounting Supervisor must be skilled at and have experience in reviewing and changing business processes as it relates to revenues and expense transactions. In this position, you will use your expertise and experience to identify opportunities for improvement and develop solutions.

Moreover, the Senior Accounting Supervisor is responsible for user set-up maintenance and training of staff on Institute’s Purchase Card system. The Senior Accounting Supervisor is responsible for implementing and maintaining user-controlled set ups that support strong internal controls over transaction recordings. In addition, the supervisor also issues purchase cards to staff, including setting up and changing credit limits.

The Senior Accounting Supervisor must stay current on the Public Sector Accounting Standards for the Institute and ensure compliance with Canadian generally accepted accounting principles. Strong analytical skills and a commitment to accuracy, compliance, and client service are essential in this multifaceted role. A high level of customer focus is essential and must be maintained throughout all facets of the job. Effective oral and written communication skills are essential to be able to present a persuasive rationale for change. Qualifications & Requirements

  • BBA (Bachelor of Business Administration) or BComm (Bachelor of Commerce) or equivalent degree qualification;
  • Current enrollment in the CPA Program with aimed completion within reasonable years.
  • Minimum of one-year formal supervisory experience.
  • Working experience with mid-market ERP computerized system (preferably UNIT4) is essential,
  • Participation in cross organizational business process improvement projects;
  • Combined three years’ experience in each functional area of accounts receivable and accounts payable;
  • Solid knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and theory;
  • Willing to upgrade through professional development courses to keep current with changing accounting standards;
  • Proven knowledge and application of accrual based accounting principles and journal entries related to job responsibility.
  • Proactive and solutions oriented;
  • Demonstrated leadership, team building, and coaching skills;
  • Ability to resolve conflicts;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
  • Ability to remain calm in stressful situations;
  • Proven ability to establish work priorities and to work in a high volume, detailed environment;
  • Comfortable with public speaking and delivering internal training;
  • Excellent analytical and problem solving skills, including situational and mathematical;
  • Inquisitive and initiates learning new information in formal and informal ways;
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and sensitivity in all matters;
  • Ability to recognize and protect confidential and privileged information using discretion and tact when communicating;
  • Ability to research subjects related to job responsibilities that include internet searches, telephone calls, or consulting with external peer or subject matter experts.
  • Intermediate Excel and proficiency in Word; Major information systems (E.R.P) experience such as Unit 4, Colleague or S.I.S. is preferred.

What JIBC Offers
