Our organization

The Alberta Securities Commission (ASC) is the industry-funded regulator responsible for administering the province's securities laws. It is entrusted with fostering a fair and efficient capital market in Alberta and with protecting investors. As a member of the Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA), the ASC works to improve, coordinate, and harmonize the regulation of Canada's capital markets.

The Office of the Chief Accountant (OCA) provides expert knowledge in accounting, auditing, and financial reporting to ASC employees, as well as guidance to reporting issuers and their advisors. This division is involved in policy initiatives related to these areas and provides training to professional accountants within the organization.

The opportunity

Reporting to the [Position Title], this position is accountable for providing expert knowledge in accounting, auditing, and financial reporting to internal and external stakeholders. The role will appeal to an experienced CPA, offering opportunities to deepen understanding of the capital market, the operations of the ASC and the CSA, and to work on emerging issues, gaining an in-depth understanding of securities regulation.

Key responsibilities include
  • Researching the content and timing of key accounting and auditing developments to ensure the OCA is aware of issues and their implications for the capital market. Drafting communications with standard setters as needed.
  • Providing educational information to staff and coordinating/training sessions.
  • Serving as an expert on complex accounting, auditing, and financial reporting issues to staff, management, and Commission members.
  • Participating in the CSA Chief Accountants’ Committee and other policy initiatives or projects on an as-needed basis.
  • Engaging in networking to disseminate and gather relevant information and making outreach efforts as necessary.
The ideal candidate will possess
  • A Canadian CPA designation with at least ten years of post-qualification experience in accounting, auditing, and financial reporting for public companies.
  • Deep understanding of IFRS, US GAAP, ASPE, Canadian auditing standards (CAS), and the standard-setting process in Canada and internationally.
  • Proven ability to apply independent judgment to complex issues.
  • Strong research skills, independent technical thinking, and exceptional problem-solving abilities.
  • Effective time and project management skills.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • Basic knowledge of the Canadian securities regulatory environment.
