Job summary

Cereals Canada is seeking a Senior Accountant in Winnipeg. You will handle a broad range of accounting duties, including A/P, A/R, GL, budgeting, payroll, and financial analysis, reporting to the VP, Finance & Business Management.

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education in accounting, finance, or a related field.
  • CPA designation preferred with several years of accounting experience.

Responsibilities

  • Manage day-to-day accounting functions, ensuring financial transactions are accurate, complete, and processed in a timely manner.
  • Process accounts payable and accounts receivable transactions and follow up on outstanding balances.
  • Maintain the general ledger and complete monthly and year-end reconciliations.
  • Prepare and process journal entries and investigate discrepancies.
  • Maintain accurate fixed asset records and process capital acquisitions and disposals.
  • Prepare banking transactions including EFTs and wires.
  • Prepare financial reports, including balance sheets, statements of operations, and cash flow projections.
  • Assist with the annual budget process and monitor variances.
  • Process biweekly payroll and related accounting entries.
  • Identify opportunities to improve efficiency and strengthen internal controls.

Senior Accountant

Reporting to the VP, Finance & Business Management, the Senior Accountant is responsible for a broad range of accounting functions, including accounts payable and receivable, general ledger, financial reporting, budgeting, payroll, fixed assets, banking, and financial analysis. This position plays an important role in maintaining the organization’s financial records, supporting financial reporting and budgeting processes, and ensuring effective financial controls and accounting practices.

What You’ll Do
Accounting & Financial Operations
  • Manage day-to-day accounting functions, ensuring financial transactions are accurate, complete, and processed in a timely manner.
  • Process accounts payable and accounts receivable transactions, including supplier invoices, customer invoices, staff expense claims, participant recoveries, payments, and receipts, and follow up on outstanding balances.
  • Maintain the general ledger and complete monthly and year-end account reconciliations.
  • Prepare and process journal entries and investigate and resolve discrepancies.
  • Maintain accurate fixed asset records and process capital acquisitions and asset disposals.
  • Prepare and process banking transactions, including EFTs, wires, deposits, and cash transactions.
Financial Reporting & Analysis
  • Prepare financial reports, including balance sheets, statements of operations, projected cash flow, and supporting schedules.
  • Prepare financial analysis and variance reporting comparing actual results to budget.
  • Prepare AAFC claim reports and supporting documentation for eligible expenses.
  • Provide accurate and timely financial information to support management decision-making.
  • Assist with the annual year-end audit by preparing schedules, reports, and supporting documentation.
Budgeting
  • Assist with and coordinate the annual budget process with Management.
  • Prepare budgeted operating statements and supporting schedules for review.
  • Monitor budget performance and provide information regarding significant variances and financial trends.
Payroll
  • Process biweekly payroll, including applicable deductions, adjustments, and related accounting entries, ensuring employees are paid accurately and on time.
Process Improvement & Support
  • Review accounting procedures, financial reporting systems, and internal controls and recommend improvements where appropriate.
  • Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, strengthen financial controls, and enhance accounting processes.
  • Provide accounting guidance and training to staff and respond to financial and accounting inquiries.
  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with staff, management, suppliers, customers, and other external contacts.
What You Bring
  • Post-secondary education in accounting, finance, or a related field.
  • CPA designation preferred with several years of accounting experience, preferably in a senior accounting role.
  • Demonstrated experience managing a broad range of full-cycle accounting functions, with strong knowledge of accounting principles, general ledger, accounts payable and receivable, reconciliations, financial reporting, budgeting, financial analysis, and internal controls
  • Experience processing payroll and maintaining accurate financial records.
  • Strong attention to detail and a high degree of accuracy.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency with accounting software and Microsoft Office, particularly Excel. Experience with Sage is considered an asset.
  • Ability to work independently, exercise sound judgment, and take initiative while also working effectively as part of a team.
