Job summary

Stevenson & White in Ottawa is seeking a hands-on Senior Accountant to own day-to-day accounting and financial reporting for our growing real estate development and construction management firm. You will work closely with project managers and leadership to ensure robust internal controls and timely month-end close.

The ideal candidate has a CPA or is pursuing, 5+ years in construction or real estate accounting, and strong cost-to-complete and revenue recognition knowledge.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field.
• CPA designation complete or in progress considered an asset.
• 5+ years of progressive accounting experience in construction/real estate.
• Experience with month-end close, AP, AR and billing.
• Strong cost-to-complete accounting and revenue recognition knowledge.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Proficiency in Excel and ability to multitask.

Responsibilities

• Lead and manage the month-end close process and ensure timely financial reporting.
• Prepare monthly financial statements, reconciliations, and variance analysis.
• Produce the monthly reporting package (WIP, job profitability, GL reconciliation).
• Manage cash flow including rolling forecasts.
• Maintain accurate ledgers for properties and reconcile bank accounts/tenant ledgers.
• Ensure compliance with accounting principles and company policies.
• Process rent rolls and coordinate with Property Managers for changes.
• Assist with budgets/forecasts and provide financial analysis for operations.
• Prepare and file tax reports and support audits and reviews.

As the full-time, permanent Senior Accountant, you will take ownership of the organization's day-to-day accounting operations and financial reporting, ensuring accurate and well-managed financial processes across the business. You will work closely with project managers and executive leadership to maintain strong internal controls, improve procedures and provide financial insights that support informed decision-making and sustainable growth. The ideal candidate will have strong business acumen, sound knowledge of accounting principles and cost accounting, and a proactive, solutions-focused approach. This role is best suited to a hands-on individual who enjoys working in a mid-size business and who values having a voice at the round table discussions. Reporting directly to the CFO, you will:Lead and manage the month-end close process to ensure timely, accurate financial reportingPrepare monthly financial statements, reconciliations, and variance analysisProduce the monthly reporting package, including: WIP schedule, job profitability, GL reconciliationCash flow management including rolling forecastsMaintain accurate and up-to-date general ledgers for assigned properties, including reconciling bank accounts, tenant ledgers, and other financial recordsEnsure compliance with accounting principles and company policiesProcess the rent roll efficiently each month, recording transactions accurately in tenant ledgers, and work with Property Managers to capture monthly tenant changes while investigating and resolving account discrepanciesProcess invoices, payments, and expense allocations, and manage account reconciliationsAssist in preparing annual budgets and financial forecasts, monitor property expenses, and provide financial analysis to support operational decision-makingPrepare and file property tax, sales tax, and other regulatory reports, and support external audits and financial reviewsThis is a hands-on role with a wide scope of responsibility which is well suited to somebody who enjoys managing the finance function from end-to-end and partnering with operational leaders.
