Job description

Aston Carter's client is seeking a Senior Accountant to join their team on a one-year contract, with a strong possibility of extension. The Senior Accountant will play a crucial role in preparing monthly financials, supporting quarterly and annual financial reporting, and ensuring ongoing regulatory compliance.

Key Responsibilities

1. Preparing monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, consolidations, and note disclosures.
2. Preparing and reviewing G/L account reconciliations between the general ledger and sub-systems, while implementing continuous improvements to optimize accuracy and efficiency throughout the financial reporting cycle.
3. Evaluating and recommending new accounting policies as needed, in accordance with ASPE, NPO-accounting, and IFRS.

External Reporting

1. Preparing and reviewing working papers for quarterly and annual reporting to external regulators, and assisting with tax compliance filings.
2. Preparing and reconciling results and related schedules, including quota share reporting, portfolio transfers, and Excess of Loss Premium adjustments; facilitating external actuary’s review for fiscal year-end results.

Audit & Internal Controls

1. Assisting in the completion of all external audits, taking ownership of the annual working paper package preparation for external auditors.
2. Recommending action plans to address audit findings and reduce adjustments, while identifying and mitigating control failures through regular reviews of reconciliations and processes.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

Must Haves:

• At least 4 years of accounting experience.
• 1-2 years of Canadian accounting experience.
• Experience with IFRS 17 reporting standards.
• Strong written and spoken communication skills.

Nice to Have:

• CPA designation.
• Experience with IFRS implementation.
• Tax experience (indirect and corporate).
• Strong attention to detail and ability to manage large volumes of data effectively.
