Job summary

Scarborough Transit Connect seeks a Sequential Excavation Method (SEM) Manager to lead SEM tunnel construction activities. You will oversee daily tunnel operations, monitor ground conditions and instrumentation, and coordinate with engineering, safety, and project controls teams to ensure schedule and quality compliance.

Ideal candidates have a Civil Engineering degree and 10+ years in SEM on major infrastructure projects, with a strong focus on safety and regulatory compliance.

Qualifications

• Degree or diploma in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Engineering Technology, or a related discipline.
• 10+ years of experience in SEM construction, including at least two completed SEM projects in soft ground.
• Experience on major infrastructure projects including transit, rail, subway, or large civil construction.
• Strong knowledge of geotechnical principles, tunnel support systems, ground control measures, and underground construction best practices.
• Proven ability to coordinate multidisciplinary teams in a complex construction environment.
• Strong knowledge of construction planning, scheduling, productivity monitoring, and risk management.
• Experience interpreting engineering drawings, geotechnical reports, specifications, and construction procedures.
• Strong leadership and communication skills with the ability to build effective relationships with project stakeholders.
• Thorough understanding of applicable health and safety regulations and safety leadership.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office and construction management software platforms.

Responsibilities

• Reporting to the SEM Construction Manager, you’ll manage the safe and efficient execution of tunnel construction activities.
• Lead daily tunnel operations, ensuring work aligns with requirements, schedule, and quality standards.
• Monitor tunnel performance, ground conditions, instrumentation data, and progress, escalating risks as needed.
• Conduct daily RES meetings, review face maps, probing results, and shotcrete test results.
• Submit daily RESS to the EoR, documenting SEM activities discussed at RES meetings.
• Coordinate field activities between construction crews, subcontractors, engineering, survey, quality, safety and project controls teams.
• Ensure compliance with geotechnical, engineering, environmental, and safety requirements.
• Work with Engineering teams on field issues, design changes, RFIs, and ground conditions.
• Support schedule development and short-interval planning to keep tunnel works aligned with milestones.
• Foster a strong safety culture and ensure regulatory compliance.
• Participate in stakeholder meetings and provide updates on progress, risks, and mitigations.
