Job summary

The Calgary Drop-In Centre (the DI) is seeking a Security relief staff member to help cover vacations, sick leave, and other absences. Shifts run days (7AM–7PM) or nights (7PM–7AM) at 1 Dermot Baldwin Way SE, Calgary, Alberta, with a focus on safety, dignity, and compassionate client care.

As part of a resilient Security team, you’ll monitor facilities, de-escalate situations, and support a trauma-informed, harm-reduction environment while upholding the organization’s values and mission to move

Qualifications

  • Alberta Security License is mandatory.
  • Experience in distress or high-stress situations, including emergency response.
  • Energetic, self-directed with time management and prioritization skills.
  • Resiliency and ability to stay calm under pressure in high-volume environments.
  • Sound decision-making and critical thinking when information is unclear.
  • Strong interpersonal, conflict resolution and negotiation skills.
  • High morals, ethics and integrity.

Responsibilities

  • Create a safe, welcoming environment by approaching each situation with dignity and compassion.
  • Lead with calmness during high-pressure moments and use non-violent crisis intervention when needed.
  • Engage with clients, volunteers, donors, and community members with empathy and respect.
  • Monitor and safeguard the facility via surveillance and patrols, coordinating with the control room.
  • Maintain a visible 24/7 security presence and collaborate with emergency responders as required.

The Opportunity

Schedule: As Relief staff, you will help support staffing coverage for vacations, sick leave, and other absences. Relief shifts are assigned on an as-needed basis, offering flexibility while supporting the needs of the organization. Relief shifts are days (7AM – 7PM) or nights (7PM – 7AM).

What You’ll Do

Every role at the DI makes a difference. In this position, you will:

  • Champion a safe, welcoming environment by fostering security by approaching every situation with humility, compassion, and a commitment to dignity for all.
  • Lead with calmness and respect during high-pressure situations, utilizing non-violent crisis intervention strategies to achieve safe, respectful, and positive outcomes, including when individuals must be asked to leave the premises.
  • Serve as a trusted and approachable resource, engaging with clients, volunteers, donors, and community members with empathy, respect, and a genuine commitment to helping them find the right supports.
  • Monitor, patrol, and safeguard the facility and surrounding property through proactive observation, CCTV surveillance, regular security patrols, and effective communication with the control room, helping ensure a safe, respectful, and welcoming environment for clients, staff, volunteers, and community members.
  • Play a vital role in maintaining a safe and welcoming community by providing a visible 24/7 security presence, collaborating with emergency responders while remaining alert, responsive, and prepared to meet the physical and dynamic demands of maintaining a safe environment for all.

What we need from you
  • Alberta Security License is MANDATORY
  • Experience working in distress and/or high-stress situations, which may include emergency response
  • Energetic and self-directed, with effective time management and organizational skills including the ability to deal with several priorities at the same time
  • Resiliency and stress tolerance and the ability to maintain composure, remain calm and focused when dealing with a high volume of volatile and stressful situations
  • The ability to make sound rational decisions based on information provided and employ critical thinking where information may not be clear
  • Well-developed interpersonal, conflict resolution and negotiating skills
  • High morals, ethics and integrity
  • Ability to provide a satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check
  • A genuine commitment to the mission, vision, values, and work of the agency
Nice to Have’s
  • Completion of a college or university program in any of the following; human services, police sciences, criminology or other related programs is a definite asset
  • Previous work experience or background in military or law enforcement may replace formal education requirements
  • Experience in the human services field would be an asset
  • Experience with CCTV, access control systems and fire response systems is an asset
  • Resourcefulness and knowledge of community resources and social support systems
