Job summary

The Calgary Drop-In Centre (the DI) is seeking a Housing Locator to support housing searches, subsidized housing applications, and referrals for the clients we serve.

This role reports to the Coordinator, Housing Support and is based in Calgary, AB, with a full-time contract covering maternity leave.

Qualifications

• Must have a valid Class 5 Alberta driver’s license and be eligible for DI insurance.
• Compassion as a core trait.
• Ability to develop relationships with a wide variety of service stakeholders.
• Knowledge of community resources available in Calgary.
• Ability to provide a satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check.
• Genuine commitment to the agency's mission, vision, values.

Responsibilities

• Cultivate and strengthen relationships with landlords and housing providers; negotiate lease opportunities with clients and case managers.
• Maintain an up-to-date housing directory; track housing availability; advocate for safe, suitable housing meeting Alberta standards.
• Partner with Housing Support Workers to connect clients with resources and supports for transition to permanent housing.
• Build meaningful connections with clients; proactively address questions and provide informed guidance and solutions.
• Maintain accurate client records in the DI database; document interactions and prepare required reports.

The Opportunity

Position Title: Housing Locator
Reports To: Coordinator, Housing Support
Employment Type: Full-time Contract (Maternity Leave Coverage)
Schedule: 40 hours per rotation with 5 days on and 2 days off.
Location: 1 Dermot Baldwin Way SE, Calgary, Alberta

About the Department

Housing Supports is based out of the main Emergency Shelter, and the team works with all shelter guests to help them with rental searches, subsidized housing applications, and referrals through Coordinated Access & Assessment (which is the process used via Calgary Homeless Foundation to streamline housing needs throughout the system of care). The main goal of Housing Supports is to find safe, affordable and sustainable housing that meets the needs of the people we serve.

What You’ll Do

• Cultivate and strengthen relationships with landlords and housing providers, serving as a trusted liaison between clients and housing partners while skillfully negotiating lease opportunities in collaboration with clients and case managers to secure and sustain successful housing outcomes.
• Drive housing access and quality outcomes by maintaining an up-to-date housing directory and strong relationships with housing providers, proactively tracking housing availability, conducting Housing Quality Standard inspections, and advocating for safe, suitable housing that meets Alberta Minimum Housing and Health Standards.
• Partner with Housing Support Workers to empower clients during their transition to permanent housing by connecting them with essential resources, coordinating supports, and facilitating access to services that promote housing stability, independence, and long-term success.
• Build meaningful connections with clients through proactive engagement, actively addressing questions and concerns while providing informed guidance, support, and solutions that empower them to achieve their goals.
• Ensure accurate, timely, and impactful documentation by maintaining comprehensive client records in the DI database, tracking interactions and statistical data through proper biometric use, preparing required reports, and proactively monitoring communications to take informed action and support exceptional service delivery.

Nice to Have’s

• Completion of a post-secondary program (bachelor’s degree or diploma) in human services, community support worker, social service worker, or health-related discipline is an asset
• Previous work experience in a social service environment or similar role may replace formal education requirements
• Experience in the Human Services field is preferred
