Job summary

The Municipal Joint Services Board (MJSB) in Nova Scotia is seeking a General Labourer (SOGL) to support public waste management, curbside drop-off operations, and site maintenance. You will handle waste streams, assist with hazardous materials, and ensure accurate processing and safety procedures.

This role requires a high school diploma, a valid NS driver’s license, and the ability to work in a fast-paced outdoor environment. Competitive hourly pay and overtime may apply.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Direct the public to correct locations, safe practices, and proper waste sorting.
• Receive and process waste and stewardship items at the public drop off.
• Communicate with staff to move or load waste materials.
• Resolve waste stream contamination issues observed on delivery.
• Ensure snow removal and site project work is carried out efficiently.
• Pack household hazardous waste, electronics, and other materials.
• Operate forklift to move loads to the recycling building.
• Remove freon from appliances and dispose of appropriately.
• Operate push mowers and whipper snippers.
• Collect and dispose of waste site-wide as directed.
• Support other site staff; provide backup for scale operators.
• Other duties as assigned.

About the Role

The General Labourer (SOGL) is responsible for executing a wide range of site operations, including fulfilling the duties of public drop-off management at the public bins, waste processing, hazardous materials handling, andproviding accurate and efficient relief scale operation when needed. This position is required to provide high quality customer service while working as a team with other facility staff. The SOGL will work within most areas of the waste site, including but not limited to outdoor locations as well as landfill transfer station, household hazardous waste and electronics drop off areas, cardboard tipping floor, the public waste bin drop off area, and thescale house

Responsibilities

• Using excellent customer service skills, direct the public to correct locations, safe practices, and proper waste sorting throughout the site.
• Work with public drop off bin attendant staff to receive and process waste and waste stewardship items (i.e. electronics, paint, glycol & oil products) and household hazardous waste.
• Communicate with other staff to move or load waste materials as they are delivered to the site.
• Work with outreach and communications staff to resolve waste stream contamination issues observed as waste is delivered to the site.
• Work with Site Manager and co-workers to ensure snow removal and required site project work is carried out efficiently.
• Pack household hazardous waste, electronics, and any other recyclable stewardship materials.
• Operate forklift to take loads of packed materials to recycling building.
• Remove freon from appliances and dispose of appropriately.
• Operate push mowers and whipper snippers.
• Collect and dispose of waste throughout the site and at other locations as directed.
• Support other site staff as required.
• Provides back up for scale operators covering breaks, sick days, and holidays as scheduled.
• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Must possess a valid NS driver's license. Class 3 driver's license would be an asset.
• Previous experience with operating a weigh scale is a strong asset.
• Previous experience with cash handling and manual labour is an asset.
• Demonstrated good interpersonal skills and customer service skills.
• To effectively communicate with customers and other staff.
• Work effectively in a team-oriented collaborative environment.
• Interact with the public and co-workers in a positive manner.

Working Conditions

• $20.95 - $28.81/hr.
• Regular hours are Monday to Friday 8:00 am to 4:30 pm (40 hours per week).
• Additional hours will be required periodically depending upon work demands, including Saturdays and holidays on a rotating schedule as paid overtime.
• Occasionally lift heavy objects (up to 50lbs).
• Work occurs in areas with exposure to waste and unpleasant odours, normally outdoors
• Must wear personal protective equipment at all times
• Some duties will require working alone.
• Standing for extended periods of time
• Repetitive lifting and bending motions.
• Required to work around water.
