The Sanitation Supervisor provides leadership to team associates in their efforts to ensure that the facility and all food processing equipment is cleaned and sanitized in accordance with safety practices and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP). The Sanitation Supervisor is a critical cross functional contributor in driving continuous improvement and executing non-conformance investigations. The Sanitation Supervisor will assist operations with targeted improvements; this position will develop, communicate and lead the local strategy to ensure compliance to Barry Callebaut regional and global programs. They will perform sanitation systems gap assessments and support corrective action to ensure the plant meets quality, food safety, regulatory and customer requirements. Sanitation Supervisor ensures a strong commitment to food and employee safety.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES & SCOPE

  • Responsible for the embedding and maintaining of the Safety first mindset. Adhering to the Supervisors roles and responsibilities under the Ministry of Labour Health and Safety Act.
  • Plans, manages and directs plant sanitation procedures, programs and regulatory requirements, ensuring all plant equipment is clean and safe for production.
  • Adhering to high sanitation, GMPs, food and health and safety programs.
  • Develops operating policies and procedures as necessary for a primarily dry facility that minimizes water use for sensitive products.
  • Creates Master Sanitation Schedules for plant and warehouse facilities, interior / exterior. Ensures superior sanitation of the production plant, equipment and surrounding areas at all times. Manages downtime for cleaning.
  • Inspect all locations for unsanitary conditions or practices and take swift corrective action.
  • Mentors and motivates associates, providing training and development to optimize their performance and personal growth.
  • Participates in regular meetings with all levels of plant management to discuss quality and sanitation improvements.
  • Manage staff requirements for Vacation, time off etc. Complete daily attendance / absent reports and time sheets.
  • Follow up on work orders with the appropriate associates to ensure expeditious performance of the requested work.
  • Helps develop and report on sanitation KPIs.
  • Manage sanitation inventory and purchasing of sanitation supplies.
  • Oversee performance and appropriateness of cleaning chemicals used, including titrations and verifications.
  • Validating cleaning methodology; ensuring methods are in line with global procedures and industry best practices. Additionally evaluating the cleaning tools and inventory used by the staff ("right tool for the job").
  • Create SSOP’s for the equipment and plant structures as needed.
  • Conduct internal food safety audits as a part of the food safety team.
  • Train sanitation and production employees on proper sanitation and sanitizing.
  • Ensure cleaning tasks are completed adequately and on time.
  • Work in conjunction with the QA manager to utilize date and trends (i.e. from Environmental Monitoring programs, pest control or customer complaints) to update Master Sanitation Schedule, practices and procedures.
  • Develop and make recommendations regarding hygienic design and cleanability for facility and equipment improvements.
  • Knowledge of Root Cause Analysis and Corrective Preventive Action reporting.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Meets / exceeds requirements for food safety and employee safety.

  • Will require to work with other departments – plants across the region

EDUCATION, LANGUAGE, SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in food plant sanitation preferred.
  • Understanding of Ontario workplace safety procedures.
  • Working knowledge of HACCP, Food Safety, Chemical Safety, Microbiology, GMP principles and sanitation principles (dry and wet cleaning).
  • Understanding of wet and dry cleaning / verification processes to include COP, CIP, soil identification / chemical selection, dry clean methods.
  • Understanding of microbiology.
  • Sense of urgency to meet deadlines and self-directed.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to plan, organize, prioritize and manage time.
  • Ability to work under pressure to meet established goals and objectives.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Computer competency (SAP, Microsoft Office, Google).
  • Exposure to and experience with ISO, GFSI (BRC / SQF) is highly desirable.

ADDITIONAL CONSIDERATIONS OR COMMENTS

  • Travel requirements : Does not require to travel.

  • This role involves extensive walking throughout the plant and plant grounds, climbing stairs / ladders, squatting, etc. to complete sanitation inspections.
  • This role requires the ability to work after hours, varying start times and weekends dependent on business needs; facility operates on a 24 / 7 schedule.
  • May be required to lift up to 50lbs occasionally.
  • Ability to work in and be exposed to heat.
  • Protective equipment will be required where appropriate.

ESSENTIAL EXPERIENCE & KNOWLEDGE / TECHNICAL OR FUNCTIONAL COMPETENCIES

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in food plant sanitation preferred.
  • Minimum 3 years food plant sanitation management preferred.
  • Understanding of Ontario workplace safety procedures.
  • Working knowledge of HACCP, Food Safety, Chemical Safety, Microbiology, GMP principles and sanitation principles (dry and wet cleaning).
